The LEGO Movie - My Thoughts

Jedi Master J.

Hey, folks. I thought I pop back in again to share some of my thoughts on the LEGO Movie since well, I actually managed to see it today.

Before I start though, I guess I should take time to mention that I am looking for feedback in the previous entry on what you think I should do with my extra Oh, Tonight albums. So yeah, I appreciate it if you could leave some for that. Thanks.

Alright, I am going start right off by saying that I rather liked this movie. And well, I felt it really captured the heart of LEGO in a lot of ways. So I definitely can see why a lot of people here (From what I seen at least) seem to have like it.

Of course, I guess for me though, part of it is nostalgic to some extension as I reminds me how I used to play with my LEGO stuff as a child. Really it also makes me want to try and put more of effort into building stuff again (Although I still have space issue, so it might be awhile before I can do that.).

But anyway, I think you get the point. I enjoyed the film. And honestly I can't think of any criticism of it really (Of course, if I had viewed a few times, I might find that I didn't like or whatever. Well, actually maybe Emmet and Wyldstyle relationship annoyed me a little as I feel like that trope is overdone a bit too much in media. Eh, not that I didn't like the characters. But I wish writers could of done something else, you know.).

Hm...I know my friend didn't really like twist at the end, although he didn't tell me his exact reasoning. *shrugs* I am not going to say more on that since I don't want to spoil things for folks that hadn't seen this film yet.

As for whether or not I would recommend this film for people to check out, I say if you are at least somewhat of LEGO fan that you should give it a look at some point. I mean I am not saying it is going to be most life changing film that you have ever seen or something, but it is certainly entertaining and it has nice bit of messages to it. I know I am certainly getting DVD for it when it comes out.

Oh, I almost forgot...Do I think this film should have a sequel? Honestly no, I kind of feel like it has told the story that it wanted to tell already, so I feel like it would be forced if there was a sequel. I don't know. If they do end up doing it, I might at least give it a look.

Oh, and I thought it was nice that BIONICLE got a bit of cameo in it. :) I am kind of disappointed that I didn't see Johnny Thunder anywhere though.

Okay, it is getting a bit late here and I doubt you folks are reading all this anyway, so I guess I should just call this entry. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you all have a great day. Talk to you later, BZPers.

I don't know whether there should be a sequel. But there's going to be one, and I have little doubt that it can be done well. And based on the amount of care all parties involved in this one took to get it right, I think the chances of it being done well are pretty good.

My ideal vision for a sequel would be one where Finn enters his "dark ages"; that time when a kid begins to lose interest in Lego in favor of more "mature" interests. Since Emmet's actions are to a great extent driven by Finn's play, this could lead to Emmet's inspiration drying up and him reverting to his old, conformist way of life, potentially when there is some threat to the Lego world (sort of like Spider-Man 2, where Peter's powers start to fade and he briefly gives up being Spider-Man). It'd be up to Emmet's friends (and Finn's family) to get rekindle Finn's/Emmet's interest so he can help to save the day.

The advantages of this sort of story are that it maintains the well-received story of Finn and his family, and like the first movie tells a story that can only really be told with Lego. I only hope that the writers have the same idea or a similarly-heartfelt one.

Anyway, I hope you can make it to the BZP meetup this Saturday! It's gonna be awesome!
