Obligatory Rpg Contest Entry

Posted by Black Six , Mar 04 2007 · 21 views
BZPower
It's time for RPG Contest #5. We've settled down a bit for this one, following pretty much the same format as last time. Smeagol will be helping out a bit more than usual, since I'm pretty busy with work and class. Feel free to direct your questions to him.

There is, however, one announcement. The next RPG Contest (#6) will feature a theme, similar to RPG Contest #3. So if you want to enter an RPG without a theme, you had better start typing. If anyone has any ideas, questions, comments, etc, for or about the theme in the next contest, or anything related to RPG Contest #5, post it here or in the Contest Rules topic.

Happy role playing!

Why I Haven't Been Updating This

Posted by Black Six , Feb 04 2007 · 37 views
Real Life
I've been meaning to add an entry here for about three weeks now. As most of you know, I am attending college right now, but after this past winter break, I did not go back to campus. Three weeks ago, I began an internship at Hunter Douglas, make of window coverings. I work in their IT department, configuring computers, maintaining servers, and doing general tech support. It's not the most exciting job, but it is very informative and pays well. tongue.gif I'm also taking a night course at school one day a week.

That said, working full time and still going to school doesn't leave a lot of free time. Don't worry, I haven't abandoned BZP. But I have a lot of other things to do, so don't expect to see me as much.

Anyway, that's been most of my life these days. I've been trying to get on Xbox Live more often, I played some Halo 2 this weekend to try to get a Beta Spot for Halo 3, we'll see how that goes tonight.

That's all for now, back to the Super Bowl (go Colts!).

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?

Posted by Black Six , Dec 26 2006 · 39 views
Real Life
Hey everyone, I hope those who celebrate all had a Merry Christmas. Mine was fairly uneventful. As some of you may recall, I got my main present back in November, so there weren't many presents under the tree for me. I got a book, some of the Star Wars DVDs, and some other little stuff. The book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, we quickly read, and thoroughly enjoyed, so I figured I'd share my thoughts on it here.

The book is the basis for the movie Blade Runner by Ridley Scott and featuring Harrison Ford. I watched the movie many years ago, but it was on network TV, so it was edited. Plus, it's a long movie to begin with, so with the commercials, it was, let's see... Well, let's just say I fell asleep and never saw the end. tongue.gif

Philip K. Dick also wrote the novel A Scanner Darkly and short story Minority Report, and since I enjoyed both of those movies, I figured I'd give the books a try.

I wasn't disappointed in the least. The book is full of twists and turns, and is almost impossible to predict what's going to happen next. Rick Deckard is a bounty hunter employed by the San Francisco Police Department to track down and 'retire' renegade androids. I don't want to give too much away, but he sees a lot of action in the single day the book takes place during. If you enjoy Science Fiction, and like stories that delve into the psyche of man, then this is for you. In many regards, the action plays second string to the mental journey Deckard undergoes as he ends up reevaluating his morals and beliefs. His interaction with the androids he kills is the vehicle that causes this change, and nearly costs him his life in a few instances.

I can't really compare it to the movie, since I remember so little, but some things in the book immediately strike me as unfamiliar, meaning they're not in the movie at all. The changes I remember simplify the story on the big screen version, but the overall idea remains the same, which is more than can be said of many other adaptations.

The book is meant for adults, so I don't recommend it for younger children, but if anything I've said interests you, go and give it a read, you won't regret it.

Rpg Contest Voting Changes?

Posted by Black Six , Dec 22 2006 · 38 views
BZPower
So, over the course of the past few contests, there have been some complaints that it's difficult for new RPGs to break into the top few that keep getting into the finals poll for the past few contests. I, personally, don't see an issue in the fairness of the contest, but I'm all for making as many people happy as possible. So, here's my idea, as it stands:

RPG Contest Pro/Amateur System

The system divides the entrants into two categories which separates them during the initial stages of voting.

To be in the 'Pro' category, the RPG entry must have been in the final poll of at least one of the last two RPG Contests. If an entry won any RPG contest, it also qualifies for the 'Pro' category. This is completely optional, if a member does not want their entry in this category, that's fine.

All other entries will fall into the 'Amateur' category.

The two sections of voting will go on simultaneously. In all likelihood, there will be very few entries in the 'Pro' section, meaning fewer rounds of voting. Once both have narrowed down the entries, the top five from each will go into the final poll to decide on the overall winners.

And that's it. Please note the 'Pro' and 'Amateur' names are temporary, the best I could think of at the time. In fact, everything is still in flux, and I am open to any suggestions for improving it. Do people even want to see such changes implemented, or are they fine with the current system?

I want to hear from you guys!

PS - GO VOTE in RPG Contest #4!

Rpg Contest #4

Posted by Black Six , Dec 01 2006 · 41 views

Woohoo! It's the obligatory RPG Contest Blog Entry!

So, in the last contest, you guys complained a lot. wink.gif I decided to listen to you for the most part: no more theme, longer entry period. I hope you're all happy. tongue.gif

I know a lot of people (myself included) are dealing with the end of the school term, tests, projects, finals, etc. But hopefully you should be done with that in time to get an entry in on the 21st. Also, voting will likely be a bit drawn out since people will be in and out around the holidays; I want to make sure there's enough time for everyone to vote.

And we have a little (ok, BIG) surprise coming up for you guys, but you'll have to wait to see what it is.

So, as always, questions and comments are welcome.

Bionicle Heroes On An Hdtv

Posted by Black Six , Nov 26 2006 · 82 views
Real Life
Rewind back to Wednesday, I picked up Bionicle Heroes for the Xbox 360. Fun stuff. Black Friday rolls around, and I find myself outside of Staples at 5:45 AM. You may think I'm crazy, but by 7 AM I was back home with a brand new 32" LCD HDTV and only $500 poorer. Actually, my parents are, early Christmas present. biggrin.gif So now I get to play Bionicle Heroes at 1080i on an HDTV, nothing bad could possibly come of this.

My thoughts on Heroes so far:
I'm about halfway through the game, and while there is an obvious pattern to the levels (Rahkshi, Zamor, Titan, Piraka) there's enough variety in the level design to keep things interesting. Being a big FPS player, the controls took some getting used to, I kept trying to strafe only to start turning, oops. tongue.gif It's lots of fun trying to upgrade your Toa and collect all of the awards. It's especially challenging for the ones that require you to use Nuparu and Hewkii, since they move slowly and have such a slow rate of fire; I much prefer using Jaller or Hahli. My favorite part by far is the gold canisters. If you haven't see/heard yet, the BZPower Reference Team and some other key staff members are mentioned in the credits. It was we who provided most of the masks and such that you earn for collecting them, the names, descriptions, and some images were all gathered and provided by our hard-working Reference Keepers. I couldn't be more proud. smile.gif

So if you haven't gotten it already, what are you waiting for? Get out there and pick it up now, you owe it to yourself as a Bionicle fan.

Quick Update

Posted by Black Six , Oct 30 2006 · 56 views
Real Life
It's been a while since I posted an entry, so I figured I would do so tonight.
Halloween is tomorrow. Where will I be? Tutoring. Oh well.
Had a good time with some friends Friday night, then spent the rest of the weekend sick. I bought Ghosts of Onyx, the new Halo book by Eric Nylund, on Saturday though amazing, just like the other three novels. Highly recommended.
So yeah, that's about it.
Random idea: Who would be interested in a feature where you guys ask me questions about anything, and I answer them. 'Better Know an Admin.' Thoughts?

Short entry for tonight, since I have to get back to doing homework.

College doesn't seem to get easier after the first year. In fact, it gets crazier, busier (as you can see by the title), and much harder. Who would've thought that getting an education required so much work? So let this be a warning to you all. Also, don't try to get your Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the same time, that just makes it worse.

Back to the forges for me...

Rpg Contest #3

Posted by Black Six , Sep 24 2006 · 38 views
BZPower
So, it's almost time for the second round of voting, and I've yet to decide how I'm going to sett it up. That's why I'm asking you guys to see what you think.

My first option is to have the top three entries from each poll go on to the semis, just like last time. Also like last time, all the first place winners would go into one poll, the second place into another, and the third place into the last; five entries in each. Then, from the semis to the finals, the top four first place, top three second place, and top three third place entries would progress to the final poll. The top three in this poll would be the winners.

The other option is to have the top FOUR entries from each category go on to the semis. With this setup, however, there would be only two polls, with ten entries in each. The problem here is how to decide which entries go into which poll. My three option would be first and second & third and fourth, first and third & second and fourth, and first and fourth & second and third. All of these have disadvantages that would make them somewhat unfair, so it is difficult to decide which to choose. Whatever the choice there, the top six entries from the poll with the first place entries would progress, and the top four from the other.

One final thing, I'm going to try something new in the Semifinal Polls. I'm going to call it a 'Referendum,' since it's somewhat similar to the political process of the same name. Some of you know (and have responded) to the couple of questions I posed in the RPG Contest #3 topic. Similar questions will appear in poll form in each of the Semis, with a variety of options. Hopefully this will allow us to improve upon the RPG Contest for #4.

Questions? Comments? Go!
