Rules And Why We Have Them

Black Six

Three days in a row, I'm amazing myself here. This has got to stop sooner or later.

But until that time, a short essay for tonight.

Rules. BZPower has lots of them. Each one is there for a reason and is meant to be obeyed. Sometimes there are circumstances when it may not seem fair to the individual. Think of this, however, with over 30,000 members, we have to think of the needs of the many as opposed to the needs of the few, or the one. (A cookie for anyone who knows where that's paraphrased from.) As I have told members asking me about the rules many times, there are a lot of younger members here, and we have to keep the content age appropriate. We also don't want them going to websites they shouldn't be going to and we certainly don't want anything from those sorts of sites showing up on BZPower. That is part of why our rules may seem strict at times.

Sometimes because of this, we are forced to ban or otherwise punish members. Again, this is a few people trying to ruin things for the rest that causes those actions to take place. Every once in a while a banned member is given a second chance, but generally they are banned for good. This means that we don't want to see them back on BZPower with different accounts, sharing someone else's account, having their content posted by someone else, etc. While if you choose to talk to them outside of BZPower, that's your decision, if we hear about them dealing with BZPower-related issues, say a contest or something, action will be taken. I'm sure some of you can guess what I'm alluding to, if you can, that's great; everyone else: you have been warned.

I could go on and on with this topic, and maybe someday I will, but today is not that day, and I'm keeping it short.

We want BZPower to be the best fansite it can be. The requires us to have rules and that they be enforced. I hope you all understand that we're not trying to be mean, just trying to appeal to as broad a range of people as possible, so they can all come here and enjoy discussing everyone's favorite Lego theme, Bionicle.

All I remember right now about where the original phrase came from is somewhere in US history: either someone said it, or it's on one of the many documents. (Doing a quick search before submitting, I see you got it from somewhere else.)

On rules: it's not completely bad. Hey, we could be stricter on grammar and such, but we want people to have fun. Besides, staff would probably be guilty of that (some more often than others, at any rate). :P

Not to mention, there are stricter forums out there... I'd tell you where, but it's against the rules.

The most famous quoting of that line comes from Mr. Spock, the character played by Leonard Nimoy, near the end Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
