And We're Back

In several senses of the word. The winter decorations are back up, I'm back here on BZP... and an awful lot of things have happened since I last blogged here.

My life has been extraordinarily busy for the past month. I've had a research paper, several other papers, massive amounts of homework, an all-weekend camping trip with my earth science class (in 30ºF weather). I bought three scarves. I've spent more than a couple nights staying up until 5 AM talking about, in a word, love. I could go into more detail, but I'd rather not here. I also finally got to do tech work for theater again, and realized how very much I had missed it because of how good it felt to sit up in the lightbooth in the dark controlling the lights of a theater.

And then there's the Bionicle end of things.

About the whole thing ending, I feel a mix of meh, sadness, and disappointment. Mostly disappointment. Partly because Bionicle's ending, for goodness' sakes, but also because it went out so ... blandly. We never got a new design for the canister sets after the Inika/Piraka torso and accompanying frame. Set-wise, 2009 had a brief spark of life and then died again – we had some cool stuff in the Glatorian, but then the Legends were more of the same. Literally, even – the summer sets were just more of the winter sets.

I think I should just make a whole entry about the Stars. On the whole, I like them, and I like the idea, too, of releasing new, Avotoran-sized versions of some of the best folks from Bionicle. But the fact that they're the last Bionicle sets ever makes their flaws (as usual, some of them -really- easy to fix) even more annoying.

And about that last set thing? Go check out this poll. It would be utterly amazing if the last Bionicle set ever were a big, solid, really well-designed set form of the Great Spirit. Is it likely to happen from the efforts of a few forums? I don't know, but I like the idea so much that I'm all in favor of trying. I'd buy one.

That would certainly take Bionicle out with a bang.

Whaaaat? How come the only thing I stay up till 5 AM for is homework? I wish I could stay up late talking about something interesting...

Welcome back! :)

At least we have the storyline to look forward to. :D

Indeed; Greg himself said that now he can focus more on the storyline with the sets out of the way. I guess before he had to focus on the sets as the main characters, but now he can go all-out and use whatever characters he wants. If he does it right, I think it’ll be awesome.

On that note, any chance we might see anything literature-related from you in the near feature, ToM?

And, yes, welcome back! ^^

I think that 2010 being the last year of BIONICLE is just more reason why we shouldn't have had another torso after the Inika torso structure. Anything less versatile would be a disappointment, and anything more versatile (hard to imagine that) wouldn't have been around long enough to be used to its fullest.

Not sure which flaws among the Stars you consider "easy to fix"-- the only things I've seen that might be improvable are some piece choices, especially with feet (IMO, the new foot piece would have been more appropriate for the currently two-toed Rahkshi than for Tahu, who could have easily used the Av-Matoran foot and boosted his nostalgia factor even further).

Other flaws, like the Skrall's awkward neck, are too hard for me to even imagine alternatives-- I've tried giving Fero a more hunched posture before, and reversing that style of torso certainly doesn't do the trick considering how the torso practically eats the Agori head. Looking back, the trouble with making hunched postures is probably the very reason the Av-Matoran head was made so awkwardly long, considering how many Shadow Matoran use that torso in reverse.

Other flaws I noticed which I hope are among those you have imagined solutions to include the lack of black in Tahu's color scheme, and the jutting-forward heads of Tahu and Takanuva. Other than those I've listed or mentioned, I'm very impressed with most of the design decisions, especially with the epic treatment of that Rahkshi.

As for that poll, I'm very strongly of the belief that Mata Nui's robot form should not be a set. Mainly because it was not designed with that intent, and I doubt that LEGO could make a decent set form with existing pieces, not to mention an appropriate scale.

Yes, this is coming from someone who liked both the Karzahni set and the Toa Mata Nui set. But both of those at least had something vaguely set-style they were drawing inspiration from-- the same does not apply here. With his enormous spherical and cylindrical joints, the large form of Mata Nui could almost certainly not be handled by anything short of a System model of master builder quality, which is more than anyone could expect of an actual set, especially within the BIONICLE theme.
