How To Report A Topic

Public Service Announcements
PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE
Read it again. Things have changed.

I was once just a regular member. I've been in your shoes once before. I've seen posts that are ridiculous, useless and offensive. I have been powerless to stop them and yearned to do more. I am staff today, and sometimes I still feel this way. Knowing what I know now, this is the contribution I want to be known for, if nothing else.

May it help you become a better person on both BZPower.com and in real life.

BZPower is a great place to hang out and talk about matters related to Bionicle, Lego, or the ties that connect us. But it is so easy to make it a better place by doing one simple thing. There are instances where a Report does far more than any post could ever do. In fact, more often than not, posting will just make the topic worse. Here are some instances.

Any time you type these phrases:

I don't think this is allowed...

I think this belongs in...

Please don't flame, [member]...

That's spam, [member]...

The folder isn't public...

Reporting...

This topic was revived...

This should be closed...

...can someone please close this?

I guess a Moderator can close this now...

...anywhere in your post, DON'T post. If you do, you aren't helping the situation. You're making it worse by drawing attention to the topic/post, and any available Staff that can handle the situation are still unaware of the problem. Even a simple spam post does not warrant discussion about its merit. So what can you do to help?

Report the post.

Recently, it has become common that certain members post either incredibly offensive material or multiple topics which spam up the boards. There is no point in telling the member to stop or they'll get banned. They don't care. They know the consequences of their actions. Telling them otherwise gives them more material to burn. So what can you do to help?
  1. Report the post
  2. Go to the main Forum Page
  3. Look at the Members online
  4. Look for Teal, Green or Blue names
  5. PM them (or IM them if you know their addresses), and notify them of the situation.
This is the most effective way of dealing with the problem. Even if it's not staff from that forum, we know how to contact those who are.

Also, it is still common for normal members to say "NOBODY POST HERE!" in such threads. DO NOT do this. It does not alter the situation in any way because you aren't staff. Other members will tend to glance past your post, and it only humours the spammer. By the above techniques, you will solve the situation much quicker.

Remember,

Still feel helpless? Sometimes it takes even less than reporting and staff reprimanding. If you still want to actively help, send the person a PM notifying them of problems in their post and offer suggestions on how to solve it. Links to official or guidelines topics, a simple reminder of a rule or just a heads up (in a PM) will also have more effect than posting in the topic because then the person of interest will see it immediately.

Thank you, and Tohu be praised.

Okay, most of this makes since but, I think you got one or two things wrong;
QUOTE
I think this belongs in...

QUOTE
QUOTE
Note that this doesn't apply to, say, correcting a member on some fact of the storyline or other information that doesn't really regard BZPower's rules-- feel free to politely describe the member's error by posting if you think it's needed.

Telling a member of an official topic falls right under that.

This is actually directed at comments like "This topic belongs in General Discussion", and the post contains nothing else on the subject.

QUOTE
The folder isn't public...

What if you then tell them how to deeplink their folder? Isn't that being more helpful then not?

Actually, this is one of those "better in a PM" things. Right now, it is currently permissible for one person to do this, but of the BBC and Artwork staff I've talked to, most of them seem to prefer a simple PM nudge.

Edit: Sorry, my mistake.

No biggie. Discussion makes for better understanding. If I didn't want to hear other people's opinions, I would have simply locked this.

So, if we notice a spammer who spams just for the fun of it, we should actually PM a Moderator who's online? I thought that the reports work like PMs--you're notified of them when one appears. Just shows how useful this blog entry is smile.gif.

And since you took the effort to make this, I guess that the fight is still on. I'll try to do my best in the battle... *salutes*

Reports are sent via email to the email we specify (our accounts email that everything is sent to related to BZP).

Anyway, Makaru, you are my hero.

Yeah, reports are PM messages sent to a moderator. So you'd be sending two PM's to them if you report and PM them. Minor error Makky?

Nope. Read Than's comment.

EDIT: Not how it works on my IPB board, but whatever.

Good work here, Big Mak. You basically covered what members need to know when they see something against the rules. And this would make our jobs a heck of a lot easier if people became more aware of this.

Thanks for spreading the word. When/if I get my Premier Membership re-newed, I'll be quoting this in my blog.

After the board upgrade, it originaly sent us reports via PM, but due to the large amounts of reports we receive and how many PMs we deal with it was changed back to e-mail.

I know reports go to the admin's email, but do they also go to just the moderators of the forum and Global Mods, or all the Mods?

Or FA/FL, whatever.

And I'm assuming blog reports only go to blog staff and admins?

Blog Reports do nothing. You have to actually notify one of us, or nothing gets done.
~Makaru~

Just curious. I rarely moderate, you see. tongue.gif

Does linking to an official Topic count?

How do you mean? If you're talking about the second bullet, then no. I'm talking about "This should be in General Discussion" or "This should be in Sets" posts. Notifying a member of an official topic is a-okay.

Admins and Global Mods get reports for all forums. Forum Leaders and Forum Assistants get reports for their corresponding forum.

And yes all goes to email.

Actually, Globals just get the reports for their listed forums: for everywhere else, we've gotta find the stuff ourselves or get poked in its direction.

Posting about/replying to the infraction in question still isn't going to bring it to my attention, though: in my case, if it's not GD or BBC, you'll have to poke me with a PM if you want to tell me about it.

Well I think we all learned something today. Reports come in E-Mails, GMods only get reports from their specific forums, and 50 Omi Cool Points are redeemable only in Omiland.

I'm glad I did take the time to read this. You should get BotW just for this, Mak.

Because I'm a Blog Assistant, I'm not applicable for Blog of the Week. Just like how an employee of Pepsi cannot redeem contest prizes from their company.

I have to say, when you first had that banner in your sig, I took the link and put it in mine. I thought it was a great idea at the time, and it's there to stay. I'm glad someone's promoting the report button. smile.gif

This is very valuable information, Makaru. I only wished I had known this earlier when I noticed a post that needed to be reported and I had no idea what to do. Well, thanks for the information, I greatly appreciate it.

Ha! Even though I haven't been prowling the New Member Q and A and Reference desk forums like I should as a newb, I certainly have been followin' the rules, Inadvertantly or not...Duh Du Duh!

I learnd to report silently the hard way... I had told someone that thir topic was spam and that i was reporting. Well, i never expected that MY post was spam. Kex told me that it was, and I haven't spammed since. It was a very good idea to make an entry about this, so no one makes the mistake I did.

Lets hope that this blog entry is read by the larger populace of BZP. I see TONS of spam, and posts relating to spam, topic closure, etc.... Spam stinks. Say No to Spam.

Report buttons are golden.

Thanks for posting this entry Makaru! smile.gif Hopefully it will reach the people in a big way! tongue.gif
