Folks, I am pro-contest. How else would I host the bizarre Blogarithm Contest #4? (Which totally needs entries by the way. Fruits are being neglected!)
But this entry does not regard that. It's an idea that has been banging around in my head for a while, but I think it's about time I proposed it to BZPower in general.
Different forums have different problems when it comes to contests. Art Contests, rare as they are (anthropologists have not yet confirmed the last one), seem to be plagued by an issue of theme, divisions, and how to execute it. It's always been this way, and as such ACs have a hard time getting off the ground. SBC, the forum formerly known as LGD, used to be afflicted with such an ailment, but the recent SBC Contest #1 seems to herald, hopefully, a sea change in the forum.
BBC Contests are a different matter altogether. The BBC folks have no problem coming up with themes, and that, to me, is the issue. Within the contests retainable in the logs of recent memory, the themes have been, for lack of a better term, hit-and-miss. The 80's theme and the rock-music theme were especially esoteric and memorable for their obscure subject matter.
So, is there a way to combat an issue that manifests itself in various forums as equally various problems?
Have a contest in every forum with the same theme.
An example: SBCC1 had a great theme. That theme could have easily been adapted to BBC or GA. The right theme is crucial, since some contests are more adaptable to BBC/SBC, and others work in Art and no place else.
Still, I would like to see something like this happen, at least once, happen on BZPower. The coordinating difficulties might be massive, but the end result would be quite interesting and fun.
