RIP Scott Weiland

Laughing Man

was absolutely gutted when I heard the news last night, still finding it hard to accept even now.

Stone Temple Pilots are one of my all-time favorite bands and at least half the reason why was Scott. talented as heck and when he had it together, he was truly one of the greatest frontmen in rock. it felt inevitable that it would end this way given his history, but it's still hitting me pretty hard.

I was just in the middle of finishing up my STP collection, too. I just got one of the last albums I needed on Monday. there were a couple others I was going to put off for a while longer, but maybe now I'll go ahead and pick those up in his honor.

I was always curious about the band, after having seen their name pop up in my dad's CD collection when I was younger. I never really gave them a chance, and so I can't really comment on that front...but nonetheless, I am saddened to hear about this loss.

if you're interested in checking them out, I recommend the album Purple to start with. it's my favorite by far and a 90s alt-rock classic imo. not a single bad song on it and it sums up all their strengths as songwriters and performers perfectly.

all their albums are very different from one another (they would drastically change style from album to album, while always keeping a "sonic blueprint" to make each one distinctly STP - Scott even had a nickname, "The Chameleon", because he tended to change his vocal style a lot to the point where he often sounded like a completely different person from one song to another) so there's something in their discography for everyone, from heavy grunge to psychedelic rock to very Beatles-esque 60s/70s pop and even influences from glam rock and country. a couple of their later albums are noticeably weaker than the others (still good though), but overall you really can't go wrong with any of them.

I think my dad had Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, but not Purple. I'll have to see if I can dig the former up when I'm back home again, and thanks for the rec with the latter!
