Bionicle: Find the Masks Game

The premise of the game is pretty simple. Each of the Toa need to locate five other Kanohi masks of power in order to defeat Makuta. You can visit each region and help locate the five masks. Once youve found all five masks for a Toa, they will receive their golden Kanohi. And when youve found the masks for all the Toa, youll win the game!

All the masks are hidden, although some are more difficult to locate than others. Some will be carried by the vicious Rahi. Others can be retrieved with the help of the local Matoran. Some will require an event to happen multiple times before theyre revealed, and others will require the use of specific tools that can be found in different regions. See if you can locate them all!

The quest for the masks was one of my favorite aspects of Bionicle in the early days, and so it seemed natural to want to make a game out of it. The game made using Flash ActionScript, and all the drawings, animations, and coding were done by me. (But to be fair, by draw I do mean trace out characters based on their set images or their appearance in the MNOLG) Honestly, the MNOLG was a big inspiration for me to try this. The game isnt nearly as complex as it or some of the other fan games Ive seen in this form, but I had fun making it and I hope you can have fun playing it too.

Please feel free to leave comments on the game play or any coding bugs you notice. (Ive tried to make it uncool-dude-proof, and Im a fairly big uncool-dude myself so I was a great tester, but I still mightve missed some things.) I also have help from Swert, Kakaru, 55555, and Velox, who all tested the various stages for me and gave me helpful advice. Please report any issues and Ill either try to fix them or explain how I cant fix them. (Laziness is an important factor in this too. :P )

If you want to discuss the various locations of the masks and such, please do so in spoiler tags, because honestly thats the whole point of the game play and I dont want it ruined for new players who start by reading the topic first. But I dont mind giving hints either, since some of the masks are a bit tricky to locate, depending on your skill at these kinds of Flash games. ;)

You can also leave feedback in the topic for now, but eventually it's going to die, and so I'm channeling feedback here because blog entries can always be revived. Yay.

So anyway, this is what Ive been working on for the last month or so. Have fun, and again, feel free to leave any comments. Thanks!

If You Really Want To Mess With Me

Posted by xccj , in MOCs Jun 24 2013 · 317 views

You could go to this poll and vote for my Penguin in the BBC Contest. Cause then I'd be forced to somehow find a way to ship it, and it's kinda big and bulky and heavy, which all adds to the cost.

Or you could vote for Terror Bird, which is my favorite in the poll. (But I wanted to give myself one vote so I did cause that's just how I roll.)

Lame Archive

Posted by xccj , in Thoughts Jun 18 2013 · 280 views

For a reference, I wanted to go back and look at one of my older Bionicle stories, one that had actually gotten a decent response on BZPower back in the day. But for the life of me, I couldn't find it saved on my computer. (But having looked up the date, I realize that it was probably written in the brief period where I owned my own laptop... which was stolen after six months, along with a whole bunch of my work that I had neglected to save elsewhere. Well, that's one mystery solved.)

But anyway, failing to find my copy, I decided to look up BZP's. Cause, y'know, I posted it here way back in the day, and when you post something on the internet, it never disappears. NEVAH! (Oh wait, I guess that only applies to embarrassing stuff and not work I'm proud of.)

So I dove into the BZPower Archive. After some searching and browsing and logging in again, I found the topic. :D Then I opened the topic. No posts were saved, just the topic and it's meta data (date, title, author, ext).

I looked up more of my old stories, as well as my review topics. Only a few of them had anything saved, and most was incomplete.

So really not much of an archive as far as I'm concerned. :P Oh well. (Google isn't any help either; their "cached" version is only a month old so it's the same blank page.)

I'm not complaining or anything: I know how much data there was to save on the old BZP forums, and I'm amazed that any survived at all. But yeah, just posting my findings. And anyway, why live in the past?

Everybody Loves Penguins

If you say you don't, then you're lying, both to us and to yourself. :P

I love penguins so much, that I made a MOC of one and entered it into the latest BBC Contest.

MOC Topics Here. Or you can comment on it in this blog, in case you're too embarassed to be associated with my work in the BBC Forum. (THEY MIGHT JUDGE YOU)

So comments and stuff appreciated. And if you really want to mess with me, vote for it in the contest so that I'll have to actually send this bulky thing to Virginia!

Game UpDate

Ha, if you thought this was about some video game I was playing, YOU'RE WRONG!  This is about the game I'M MAKING!
So, a few blog posts back (wait, only three posts ago?  Man, I need to update this more) I asked for artists who'd want to help me make this Flash game.  No one responded.  But that's okay, cause I DON'T NEED Y'ALL and I made the artwork myself.   And then I added animation and code and clicky stuff and things.  It's a game!!
Okay, it's not 100% completed.  If I'd give it a percentage, I'd say 80%.  There are six levels for each region on Mata Nui (the classic island, not some dumb ol giant robot inner universe) and I have all of them completed except for Le-Koro.  The gameplay is you collect hidden masks.  Hopefully I can finish it in a week or so, and then I can post it here and in my resume to show that I can code stuff.  (What, Flash Actionscript is going out of style and isn't as important to web developers?  NOOO!)
Okay, really, the art could use some improvement, and there are still some bugs in it that either I don't know how to fix or I have a vague idea of how to fix and am too lazy to try it yet because it kinda works anyway.  I've already had ideas for similiar, future projects, so if there's an artist out there who wants in, let me know.  ;)
I'd also like to thank Swert and Kakaru for testing it for my and telling me what's broken and such.  (They're the only people who'll respond to my IMs anyway, and only some of the time at that.)
I don't really have stuff to show yet, so in the meantime, here's a Mahi.
