Where We're Going, We Don't Need Roads... Just FAA Flight Regulations

So I visited the LEGO Store today and made some purchases, in which I got a Martian Manhunter fig. The fig itself isn't that interesting to me (I'm not that big a fan of MM) but I figure there'll be others out there clamoring for him, so I could trade him for another rare figure that I would want.

But the highlight of my purchase was the 21103 Cuusoo Back to the Future Delorean. I finally committed on my purchase after I voted for that model... what, two-three years ago? I've been keeping an eye out for it in stores but never saw it, and I never really wanted to pay shipping for it, so I never got it online. But today I was ready for the purchase (having a gift card and VIP points) and was delighted to find two left in stock. And it's a good thing I grabbed it too, since the other one got snagged minutes later.

As for the model, it's delightful, with some very fun designs. My model does come with the misspelled brick, but whatevs. The only thing I don't like about it (which has been mentioned in like EVERY review I've read on this) is that Marty and Doc can sit inside together, and there's no easy modification to remedy this. But either way, this is going on my desk at work for display first thing tomorrow!

The other set of interest, surprisingly, was the Friends Life Guard stand. (I wanted the penguin set, but they didn't have any in stock.) It comes with some nice colors, from medium lavender (my new favorite Friends color) and trans medium blue cheese slopes (the color that glows well under a blacklight!!) But the dolphin is such an excelent mold. Like all Friends animals, it has a pin hole on the top of its head for bows and whatnot, but the hole is perfectly placed for a blow-hole, which is super amazing. (And borderline animal cruelty by putting a bow piece there.) It has a stud connection in it's belly which is a little weird, but what I wasn't expecting was the stud connection on its tail, so it can be placed over the blue plates in mid-leap. Such a great animal mold... now I want more to create my own pod!

I didn't get any Hero Factory tho, but not thru lack of trying. Their selection was rather sparse; they had a few of the humanoid mechs (I already got one), the Splitter beast and flying beast (not interested) and the Evo XL Machine (too expensive for me.) And, with the exception of the flying beast, there were only a few left, and absolutely none of the purple beast, which I wanted. I talked to one of the store employees, who said that they've been selling pretty well, and the purple ones just flew off the shelves. (I went to a retail store later in the evening and they were also out of all Hero Factory models too.) So say what you want about Hero Factory, but this is not a dud theme by any means, since people are buying it out. Maybe I'll go back in April, when they'll have double points, and see if their selection is any better.

Also MIXELS but that's another blog entry...

Uhh.... They can totally sit together, with the doors closed, with no modification. You just need to prop one of the figure's legs awkwardly over that cheese slope in the side. I've got both sitting in mine on my bookshelf right now.

AFOLs and Lego Friends seem to go hand-in-hand. They're either buying it for the unique colors (SIX NEW COLORS!) or the new molded elements. If I had a chance now, I'd buy enough Hedgehogs to start my own army. Too bad I missed out on that it seems.

You actually can sit the two minifigs side-by-side, though the doors don't quite close completely. See this image from the Eurobricks review of the set.

Thankfully, the official set images for LEGO Friends have managed to avoid the mistake of putting a bow in the dolphin's blowhole. :P I love the number of connection points the new dolphins offer, in part because it lets you do this.

Which of the HF humanoid mechs do you have? I hope it's Furno Jet Machine. That's the best of them in my opinion. Beautifully creative build, and also nice and colorful. And Evo XL Machine is somewhat expensive by Hero Factory standards, but it's also one of the best sets from the first wave in terms of value for money. Great pieces (and lots of them), cool action feature, and an imaginative design. But hey, if you want to save your money for other sets this year, I can't fault you. There are a lot of amazing sets coming out this year, across a wide range of themes!

And yay Mixels!

Yes, you can "technically" squeeze both minifigs in. But I want a solid connection without the "barely attached to the studs" look, where the doors also close properly. You could cram them in haphazardly, but that's not what I want, and there's no easy way to get what I want without expanding the whole car by like 2 studs... Anyway, if marty's driving it, then he can't be on his skateboard, so I'll just have to do with that.

I have the Rocka Stealth machine, which apparently doesn't have a camoflauge adaption. I chose it over Furno's mech not so much for the design, but because it had more pieces that I could use (6 of the small joint pieces vs just 1, and that 3L rod with a ball joint built in... can't get enough of those.) Plus, trans bright green. I want the Evo XL machine, which looks to have lots of great elements, but my budget was only so large.
