No Dark Side? No Problem! by Xccj, on Flickr
So this is my new last-minute BrickCon Project. I mentioned in my earlier entry that the Dark Side display, which is meant for black light MOCs and MOCs with lights that look better in the dark, has apparently been discontinued this year. I'm basing this on my observation of them removing it from their theme list on the website. (I had a few MOCs registered for it, and then they got moved to "uncategorized".)
In previous years, the display was a giant cover that went over roughly two tables, with some space in the back for people to sit. Black lights were strung up overhead and on the table, and while it was a far cry from true darkness, it was shaded enough to give lighted models a little bit of a boost. Thing was, hardly anybody would contribute MOCs. I have for the last couple of years (and never managed a trophy from them) but it helped make some of my stuff look cool. But, I guess from the lack of interest, or because the guy running it is too busy this year to contribute, it's not showing up.
So I could just put my models out there without special lighting... or just do the whole dang thing myself.
The above is my version. It's 16 x 20 x 16 inches, roughly. The frame is made of piping, and I actually ventured into a fabric store to get the covers, and then a black light is hung up on the top. And it works, almost better than the old display. There's less of an opening to let ambient light in, and the smaller space means the black light can be more concentrated. On the other hand, it's way too small to accommodate my SHIP, but it will give Gali a chance to shine. (That, plus I can get away with this extra display in Bionicle, but not so much at the Space table.)
So I made my own dark side, and I am keeping my cookies. (And if my deductions are wrong and there actually IS a Dark Side display this year... oh well, egg on my face.)
Speaking of the dark side, I just watched the first episode of Star Wars Rebels. I've read a little bit about it from FBTB, and it sounds like they absolutely loathe the idea. But I thought it was pretty good, and seems to capture the universe better than the Clone Wars cartoon (from what little I saw of that) and, let's just say, the prequels. In my opinion, obviously. I might have to follow this one, see if they can keep it up.
