A cure for earworms

Posted by The Dandy Automaton , Mar 24 2013 · 134 views

From The Telegraph's website:

They are the songs you cannot get out of your head. Now scientists may have found a way to help anyone plagued by those annoying tunes that lodge themselves inside our heads and repeat on an endless loop.
Researchers claim the best way to stopping the phenomenon, sometimes known as earworms – where snippets of a catchy song inexplicably play like a broken record in your brain – is to solve some tricky anagrams.
This can force the intrusive music out of your working memory, they say, allowing it to be replaced with other more amenable thoughts.

After spending at least an hour playing anagram games online I can safely say that...nooope. All that it's achieved is switching the song repeating itself in my head. Oh god, this is horrible (not the song, the sensation).

I remember hearing several years ago that the best way to get rid of an earworm is to actually listen to the song that's in your head.

Needless to say, that never worked either.

Yeah...Yeah, no. That doesn't work. I try listening to different songs and all I think is how this song is good but I'd still prefer to feed the earworm.

Normally I love it when I have a song stuck in my head

Except when I can't recall the name to find it later D:

Two years, man. I spent two years with a song stuck in my head where I didn't know the right lyrics or anything to do with the title. And you can't Google a tune. The feeling of victory when I finally found it was immense.

Impressive. The longest I've done that is three weeks.

I did place the tune eventually.
