The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Posted by Kohaku , Nov 30 2011 · 117 views

Zelda epic
I just beat it.

Total time was a little over 49 hours, with most sidequests completed.

It is probably the most amazing game I've ever played.

Defeating enemies has never felt so good. Defeating a horde of unending enemies has never felt better. The game makes you care for the characters.

I plan to post a full review at some point. Probably for my new website, but that is another story that I won't be able to share due to it having forums. I will post a version here.

Skyward Sword for Game of the Year.

Groose for Character of the Year.

I agree wholeheartedly with all of this. =D Especially Groose. This version of Link needs a special mention, however, for his awesome personality.(Yes, he technically has one this time, though it also technically depends on the player and could differ each playthrough. =P)

But yeah, that 'hordes of enemies' thing was certainly one of the most awesome things... Just when you thought this Link couldn't get more awesome.

Glad to hear that you liked it. I really like that this game requires you to use unique ways to defeat an enemy. Although, I do wish there was an option to play without motion control.

When I went back home for Thanksgiving break, I got to play SS for about 4-5 hours. I still hadn't reached the first dungeon. :P

Looking forward to playing the game for the Winter holidays.

Agreed! I'm going to differ my playthrough on Hero Mode and try other ideas some friends have discovered. Protip: Bombs plus Deku Babas is awesome.

I honestly think that a normal controller would take away from it. When you swing, Link swings. So every battle feels like such a rush and every victory is important. This is in my opinion what I want from games, I want to feel like the Hero. I want to experience what Link does, or any character. This is the first game to make me feel like that.

When the Wii was first announced this is the type of gaming they promised. I'm glad to see this promise delivered on, because I have never been so pulled into a game before. This is a future of gaming that I can stand behind.

I agree with you, it's just that there are those who prefer button smashing instead of motion control. I was one of the people who didn't think motion control could be pulled off properly for SS, but I was wrong.

Seems a bit too late that they are delivering a promise now with the Wii U coming out next year. :P

Erebus: Well, I don't think it could even work as a button-based game; I'm trying to think of how they could attach the sword swings to a normal system... And I'm up to like seven buttons in total(Since you need so much precision). That, or mapping the sword to a right analog stick, which I wouldn't be opposed to... But it still wouldn't be a button masher; it'd be much different. =P

I definitely agree with what Kohaku said in that latest comment, I definitely want more games in this style. I tried to play Ocarina 3D the other day after 5 or so days of playing Skyward Sword. I think I exited the Temple of Time and killed some of the Redeads before I saved and quit. =P I'm honestly surprised, this made Ocarina's outdated system apparent. =/ Even for TP I could go back to Ocarina easily; but this... With the dash, and awesome sword controls, and all the other control upgrades, I just can't do it. I'll likely even have a problem getting myself to play Wind Waker again. =/

Kohaku: I wanna see what happens for a couple of spots, if you choose something different. I might just save before then and keep reloading my save. I also wanna see what sarcastic Link is like in that one scene. =P

And I know about rolling bombs at those silly things that shoot stuff at you, but I haven't tried them against the Deku Baba; I should try it.

Yes, it took a while to deliver on the promise of the Wii, and yes they have a new system coming out. With the Wii U I am even more excited after playing Skyward Sword, because it will be compatible with the Wiimotes and other accessories. Therefore I think a game could take advantage of the Wii U controller as Link's map, and a combination of what we see in Skyward Sword. The possibilities are endless to what we might see accomplished.

I agree so much on those points, it makes Ocarina of Time 3D feel dated. I love the game, but Skyward Sword has raised the bar so high.

I will be playing a bit differently my second playthrough. For the moment I'm taking a small break from it. XD

As for other tips: Gossip Stones, try using bombs, arrows, the whip, the harp, etc. against them for awesome results.

Also the demon kitties, try throwing them in the water or off of Skyloft.

So, "Am I late?"
It took me 42 hours to beat the story. That was ###### impressive.
It's easier to list the things I didn't love so, here goes:
POTENTIAL SORT OF SPOILERS:
The fifth dungeon was dissapointing. Especially after the Sand Sea and when compared to the others.
Fi could have used some actual character developement before the ending.
While the final battle was epic, I think the final boss could have used some more screentime and motivation. Maybe one last mega dungeon where he would show up intermittently and subtely reveal more about him and Hylia. If you're going to give a reason for Ganon, why not for him?

Aside from those flaws, I'd say it was near perfect.
