Durable Headphones

Posted by Engineer Alexandra Humva , Jul 10 2012 · 136 views

B6's recent audiphillia entry made me think about the state of my headphones. They're currently being held together with a liberal application of epoxy and hot glue, because my headphones take a serious beating. I could never buy a $500 set of headphones because they'd be wrecked by the end of the year. So I just stick with buying a forty dollar pair every half year or so and it works.

If someone could direct me to headphones that are, say, made out of steel or something, are made for durability, and aren't absurdly expensive, it'd be great.

I'd actually like to know this too. What we need is the ThinkPad of headphones.

Yes. I want something I can chuck across my basement thousands of times and come no worse for the wear.

I don't think you can do that with the ThinkPad, but it comes close.

I dunno, those things are tough. Many of the folks at work swear by them.

Please direct me immediately to where you get such low prices.

Also, I want headphones, not earbuds. Earbuds never have long enough cords for my purposes.

In my town's Chinese Bazaar... However, I really doubt my headphones are what you're looking for. The sound quality isn't that good and they're quite short. But in economical-crisis striken Catalonia, it's ok.

Steel? Too heavy. Titanium would be better, a little more pricy, but better. But of course you would probably have to sacrifice good sound for better durability.....

I don't see how either apply myself. I'm not talking about tungsten carbide steel, stainless steel would work just fine. Think less car and more steel spork. My big problem with my headphones is that the plastic frame always snaps; I can take a picture for a better clarity. All you do is replace the cheap Chinese plastic with spoon steel. There's a risk of bending it, but I bend spoons all the time (not with my mind I'm afraid), so if I did bend it I could just as easily bend it back into shape. Maybe put higher quality steel for the hinges.

Sound quality... I work off of $40 phones, so long as it isn't tinny I don't really care.

Presumably in-ear is not what you want, which is unfortunate - I've had several steel in-ear headphones.

I go through headphones really quickly too, but that's because I completely destroy the cords. Current ones are insulated with fabric rather than plastic and have lasted me over half a year, which is impressive by my standards (I go through them once a month normally, seriously).

My headphones typically get cracked in the frame, not ever the cords, because I'm generally kind to the cords. In ear headphones would be fine, but they never have enough cord length for me to comfortable sit at my computer.

WARNING:

The following blog contains excessive rambling on the world and extremely poor paragraphing. If you are easily offended or turned off by these two things, leaving now would be a good idea.

This blog is written by Alex Humva, penname of some random teenager named Alex Censored. He writes stories, writes rants, writes screenplays, plays games, makes games, has a terrible work ethic, and is generally sarcastic. He believes in a Judao-Christian god, but most other people who do too give him a glare because of his weird beliefs, possibly because he's somehow bi at the same time. He's an utter equalist who feels that any discrimination amongst humans for things they were born with is wrong. He doesn't care about xenos though, let them all burn.

He's also an aspiring engineer who hopes to get a scholarship at his local big engineering college and one day help humanity. More likely he'll be a pencil pusher in a basement somewhere, but he's a bloody minded optimist.

Because of his peculiar personality and beliefs, he gets into fights often, though they usually end when he wakes up the next morning and doesn't feel motivated anymore.
