So I went to my best mate's house today; had a good time. Went home, found out my family will be filing for bankruptcy sometime early next year. I knew it had been coming for a while now, some of my BZP friends had heard me talk about it. Still hit good and hard though. Then I read the news and see the merciless slaughter of children. So I might not be in the greatest mood for this ****.
The blogosphere has been overrun with a merciless battle between two factions; I thought of myself on the side of equality, on the side of those who would protect the innocent and remove discrimination. I still am. But I am so very dissapointed. Dissapointed in how what should be a civilized debate is in fact more akin to a flame war. Dissapointed in myself for ultimately finding myself in the middle, trying desperately to justify both sides in my head.
I think some of today's salvos really pushed me over the edge on this discussion. I'm a bisexual equalist; I believe in a god and I believe in love and respect. I believe all should be equal; I don't, however, flame those who disagree. I try to understand their reasoning and I discuss it civilly.
Both sides are equally guilty of disrespecting the other side. I don't really care who thinks they have the moral highground here; hatred is so very much present here in amble supply. It's clouding everyone's thoughts, and it's even starting to get its hold on me. I don't particularly think I can serve as the comic relief here anymore. So I'll put my thoughts on the matter in a concise, not-so-rambly manner.
It makes me sick to think of what people think here. It makes me sick to think about the hate that we throw at each other. It makes me sick to think that people have, in their minds, a moral high hill that they stand upon and cannot be removed from. It's dogmatism, plain and simple. I don't care if you support my right to marry another man or if you don't, dogmatism never helped anyone in the long run.
All in all, I can still remember a BZPower where people didn't insult each other over politics. I can remember a more friendlier blog atmosphere, a place where you could talk about your issues and people would actually respect your opinions and discuss it with a manner of civility. It'd drive me to leave if it weren't for the fact that I believe that, if we actually try, that can come back.
Am I making a value judgment on anyone? No, because that's fuel for the fire. Everyone, including myself, has committed some degree of harm in this debate. So I ask the readers and makers of the blogs to look at what they're doing. Look long and hard. And ask yourself, is it really worth it?
If you think it is, I'm not going be able to change your opinion. I just ask you to consider that hatred is not a one way street; insulting those who would discriminate is no more noble than their own discrimination. Consider for a moment that you might actually have some effect... but rather than for good, they're verbally assaulted, and it doesn't do wonders for their mind. Abusing the abuser may be poetic justice; it's no less sickening though.

It's gotten completely out of control. I'm all for trying to stop intolerance, but the chaos was reached a point where this whole thing is endangering the structure of the site. Continued chaos serves no one.

I'm glad there are members here that think similarly.

I don't have a big speech prepared, so I'll keep my opinions on the matter short and sweet.

I can tolerate intolerance for that is opinion.  I cannot tolerate the action of intolerance for that causes harm and can drive people to madness.

On a far more personal note, I am terribly sorry to hear about your family's problems.  I wish you the best, and remember to hang in there.  Be strong.

Alex is the guy who has it right here. I'm not going to say anything more on the matter because I don't think anything more can be said, but I wanted everyone to know how genuinely awesome Alex is. He's been polite, respectful, understanding, supportive and logical throughout this entire mess, and he has my complete support.
It's people like him and the members I've had the honour of discussing everything with that make BZPower worth it in the end, and why I am proud to serve such a fine community, even through its ugly spats and difficulties over the years.
Major kudos for everything, man. I'm proud and at the same time completely humbled to know such an awesome member.
I'll be keeping you, your family, and those who knew the victims of the slaughter in my prayers.

I tried to say something like this and it didn't go over well, but you hit the nail on the head - if people stopped hating and started civilly debating, we could actually have a productive discussion. Heck, maybe the two sides could understand each other a bit more instead of becoming even more entrenched in combat. Great post

I'm sorry to hear about all the stuff that's going on with your family.

Honestly, I'll go right out and say that I think the blogs are absolutely destorying the feel of this site. When I first joined BZP, I knew it mainly as a place where I could post silly little Bionicle sprite comics and share my even siller theories on who the spiders on the cover of Bionicle Adventures 7 were. Later on, I knew it as the place where I could find great fanfiction featuring Bionicle and other lego themes, help expand the Expanded Multiverse, and of course discuss the increasingly complex Bionicle storyline. But since the downtime, the only thing I really associate it with is lengthy, weighty flamewars about gender and sexuality. This latest argument alone has probably commanded more attention than entire subforums of BZP, many of which are practically dead at the moment. As far as as I am concerned, if a forum that is supposedly devoted to the discussion of toys sees far more discussion about relationships and social issues, something is seriously wrong.

The following blog contains excessive rambling on the world and extremely poor paragraphing. If you are easily offended or turned off by these two things, leaving now would be a good idea.
This blog is written by Alex Humva, penname of some random teenager named Alex Censored. He writes stories, writes rants, writes screenplays, plays games, makes games, has a terrible work ethic, and is generally sarcastic. He believes in a Judao-Christian god, but most other people who do too give him a glare because of his weird beliefs, possibly because he's somehow bi at the same time. He's an utter equalist who feels that any discrimination amongst humans for things they were born with is wrong. He doesn't care about xenos though, let them all burn.
He's also an aspiring engineer who hopes to get a scholarship at his local big engineering college and one day help humanity. More likely he'll be a pencil pusher in a basement somewhere, but he's a bloody minded optimist.
Because of his peculiar personality and beliefs, he gets into fights often, though they usually end when he wakes up the next morning and doesn't feel motivated anymore.
