National Novel Writing Month: 2014 Pre-Show

Greetings, Peoples!

NaNoWriMo is upon us once again! For those of you who have never heard that term, it stands for National Novel Writing Month. Sounds pretty cool, right? For all of those who love to write, a challenge is issued; write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I've tried it a few times in the past, but have never 'won' a year. This year, though, I plan to succeed.

So how does this all work, you ask?

Well, if you want to participate, check out the official NaNoWriMo site. You can sign up with your own account, then start filling in the basics; author profile, title of book, synopsis...

"But wait! I don't even have an Idea yet!"

Don't worry! You still have some time to brainstorm an idea. I wouldn't wait too long though; the average words a day is 1,500, and that can rack up quick if you miss too many days. Thankfully, NaNo gives you some helpful widgets (Such as the one to the left) that can help you keep track of your word count. Every day, you can enter the amount of words you have written in a search bar-like area at the top of the homepage. You can go over 50 words, but you have to have at least 50,000 by November 30th.

"So what happens if I win?"

You get a pat on the back!

Actually, there's a lot of cool stuff you could win, including a paperback copy of your book! Be sure to check out the website for more details.

"So just how do I get started writing a book?"

That's more information than I could ever fit into one post. Thankfully, there are a ton of resources online that can help with that. I'll probably also have another post with some helpful tips and worksheets.

"Enough with the advertising, already!"

Ok, Ok. So, as I do NaNoWriMo this year, here are my personal rules:

My NaNo 2014 Challenge!

-I can do all the planning and Research I want, but I cannot start writing the book itself until Nov. 1.

-I can write at least 2,000 words a day (Which really isn't that hard for me.)

-I can not go back and do any editing until I have finished the book. (This is a good way for a book to get stuck.)

-I can not buy Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire until I have finished my book. (That, and it will be killer on my homework.)

-I can not write chapters out of order. I can know where I want the book to end, but I can't start by writing the final chapter.

-Every week, I will post an update on the book to this blog (to keep me motivated and on track.)

And that's it!

So stay tuned! On Nov. 1 I will announce the title of my story and even give a sneak peek at the first chapter!

Happy Writing!

I am also participating in NaNoWriMo this year (as I do every year), but unlike you I am not going to record it on my BZP blog. I used to do that, but this year I think I'll be too busy in November to blog about it on BZP, mostly because I'll have a bunch of other things going on next month that will eat up most of my free time.

As for planning, I'm doing something a little different from what I normally do this year. I'm writing a bunch of short stories set in the novel's setting to help me worldbuild and get to know the characters better, which I've heard other writers recommend but which I've never done before myself.

I must say that, so far, this is infinitely superior to my original method of worldbuilding, so maybe I'll make this part of my normal writing method (at least when I'm writing in a new world).

Anyway, good luck with your novel, Jalina. NaNoWriMo is always tons of fun, especially if you succeed.

I've never done it before, but I intend to this year; while it will require putting the writing of my epics on a delay (and I'll still need to squeeze in hosting time for games and such here), I'm hoping I can do it.

Since it's my first year participating though, I won't be adding any restrictions to it. :P

It's my first year too, although I am not using it to write a novel but instead using it to finish all my writing projects for the past year or so. I do need to make a blog post about that soon, don't I...?

I tried last year, and suffice to say it was a half-hearted effort. And that's probably an overstatement. My goal was to do better planning this year so I'd have a much better sense of direction, but that didn't end up happening either. None of that matters, though, since I'll be far too busy this month doing other things. Writing for fun just isn't in the cards right now.

Good luck to those who are participating, though!

Thanks for all the support guys!

"Thanks for sharing this with us..." Yeah, I kinda noticed that after I posted, 90% of the blogs suddenly started featuring NaNo. Just seemed kinda funny to me.
