Testing Out a New Story Concept

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Jul 24 2014 · 89 views

As promised, A Mind in Darkness is now complete! The whole thing comes in at over 11,000 words. I’m glad I followed through on the idea—maybe there’s something else from that booklet I can use as inspiration…

Anyway, on to the main point of this entry. When I announced A Mind in Darkness, I mentioned that I was working on another new project. In the past, I worked on some stories about humans who could use the power of Bionicle (and other) characters by turning “spirits” into armor—that series is pretty dead, but I still want to do something with the basic idea. Nothing like humans turning up in the MU, of course. That would just be ridiculous. What I wanted was a new world where both humans and Toa existed, and after kicking that around for a while, I got a new idea that I thought had some potential.

But, I’m not so sure there’s an audience for this sort of thing. Not much point in putting a bunch of work into a story if it’s just going to rot in some forgotten corner of the Library, right? Simply asking if there was an audience didn’t seem like the best way to go, plus I really wanted to at least experiment with this idea a little, so I decided to jump in…if a bit tentatively.

The result is the short story The Blade of Valor. Think of this as a pilot episode. Presented here is a rough working concept of a world where Toa are Elemental Spirits who watch over the humans, but when an evil force arises, a priestess is selected to bear a legendary weapon and set things right. I did a solid amount of world-building and prepared some backstory, but I don’t want to go much farther unless I see reason to. If I get a good reaction from The Blade of Valor, I’ll continue working and put together an entire story based on this concept. If no one seems interested, then I guess it just remains a one-shot.

Please read if you have the time, but a few warnings. First, the length: it’s between 4000-5000 words. Interpret that as you will. Second, I tried to make the monster in this story rather disturbing, and while I don’t know if I really succeeded in that, I figured I should at least provide a heads-up.

If you like the story, please let me know. Also, since the material presented is very tentative, suggestions are most welcome—if I do end up pursuing this, then I want it to be as great as possible. If nothing else, thank you for at least reading this entry!

A New Epic

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Jul 21 2014 · 136 views

I use the term "epic" loosely.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but a while back I found an old Bionicle lore booklet and posted some of the interesting stuff that had been dropped from the canon. One such point was a mention of a mask missing from the Ga-Suva. I got really invested in this idea, so, after some tweaking, I wrote a brief story about it.

A Mind in Darkness follows Vhisola and Macku on their quest to reclaim Turaga Nokama's Kanohi Matatu. It will have four parts, and since I'm impatient in honor of BZP's anniversary, I'll post a new one every day until we're done! So, by Thursday it'll be complete. I'd be honored if you read it!

Also, I'm working on another project, but I don't want to say much about it just yet. Expect to see it in the Short Stories forum either late this week or next week. I'll make another blog post about it, so check back here if you want to see what it is.

And, of course, Happy Birthday BZPower!

Secrets Reported

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Jul 12 2014 · 145 views

I don't care, I'm leaving that title just the way it is.

It turns out that yes, you actually can get Secret Report 21 by defeating Panthera Cantus on Easy rather than needing to do it on Hard! If I had known that, I might have been able to get it in the DS version a while ago...I'll probably take a shot at that soon.

But yeah, I got all 22 reports in TWEWY Solo Remix, watched the secret ending, and got to see Hype-chan! It's so much cooler when you earn it yourself!

Not that that will stop me from watching future secret videos and whatnot before I actually earn them, I'm really not that talented so this is a rare occurrence.

The scenes before and after the Panthera Cantus battle, as well as the secret ending, make me wonder what it is they had/have in store. I never noticed it before, but it does seem like these might be hinting at something...

Well, if they decided to rerelease Solo Remix on Android nearly two years after the iOS version, maybe they could be getting us ready for a big announcement. Or...maybe not. TWEWY definitely has the ability to stand alone as its own game, but you don't add secret artwork with a brand new character and "NEW 7 DAYS" to a port unless you've got some sort of idea in the works, right...?

Progress With the Queens

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Jul 09 2014 · 112 views
Divine Strength
After letting the document sit for longer than I should have, I finally wrote more of Divine Strength, and now things are actually getting somewhere. Chapter 2 featured the Queen of Light finding Riniyon's lair and discovering that he has created a spell capable of knocking a Queen's crown from her head--something that should be impossible. I didn't post this bit since the basics are in one of the short stories I wrote while I was forming the idea.

I have, however, posted my rough draft of Chapter 3. This covers the battle between Riniyon and the Queen, and then shows the Queen of the Sea in person while we're told what's going to happen next. The meeting between all twelve Queens is also in one of the short stories, so I might not be posting that either.

I feel like maybe I'm moving through this too quickly...although part of that might be because I haven't really planned much (if anything) beyond the point where the short stories stop. I know that a lot of accomplished writers will just write and see what happens, but I'm a little nervous to proceed when I don't have at least a plot skeleton planned out. Then again, that process didn't turn up a whole lot of satisfying results for me now did it, eheheh...

How to Train Your Baby Dialga

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Jul 05 2014 · 170 views

When transferring my Pokemon from Gen V to VI, I discovered that I had not transferred my Dialga out of Diamond before selling it. This saddened me. So, using a gift card I had been given, I set out to obtain a Dialga figure.

"I can't breathe in here."

It came (two weeks early!) packaged, so I felt I should take a picture of that. The plastic is actually styled like an Ultra Ball, which is really neat! That being said...I was impatient to unpackage him.

"I'll get you out!!"

And, here we are.

Posted Image

It's simply adorable, really. It's like a baby Dialga!

"I shall raise you as my own."

I'm sure I'll end up taking more pictures involving baby Dia here as time goes on. I'm trying to wrap this up and possibly finish a fanfic I'm working on before Toonami starts, so that's all I have for now.

Look at all his majesty...

Solo Remixed

Posted by Pahrak #0579 , Jul 04 2014 · 112 views

No, I couldn't think of a more creative title.

Anywho, I beat the final boss of TWEWY Solo Remix! Took just over 20 hours, since I didn't spend as much time grinding as I did when I played the DS version. Back then, whenever I entered a new area, I cleared out all the Noise before moving on--course, I was on vacation when that came out, and now I have a job. Curiously, they removed the reception icon. In the DS version, the number of bars you had would tell you how much Noise was in the area. Now you have to look around for it. Eh, not a big deal. I also had a lot of trouble with Pig Noise, but hopefully I'll be able to wipe them out easier now that I'm near Level 70.

Well, the final day was a lot more irritating in this version. Granted, I had a strategy guide telling me what I needed to do in the DS version, so maybe it was still confusing and frustrating then and I just didn't encounter that. But the changes made to the fight with Konishi (and, to a lesser extent, Draco Cantus) didn't make much sense and very nearly spelled the end of me. There was no indication I was supposed to do that! Thank God for Google.

When I was replaying Week 2, I realized that I had never picked up on the...implications of what it seemed like Joshua was saying. He's in the UG because he wants to be? Well after THE TWIST, that almost sounds like...

Don't worry it's not that but the real answer is another twist so I can't say

Yeah. Don't know why I never picked up on that before. But it looks like Neku didn't pick up on it either, so...

Ovis Cantus seemed tougher, too. Then again, I was at a lower level due to the whole "not grinding so much" thing, which is especially true of Week 1. It also seems like I get Fusions a lot more quickly, but that's probably just because I never quite mastered the DS battle system, eheheh...

And I wasn't cheating Shutdown PP this time. Not sure if I can, but...I might look into it, since I really want those Pins. I was able to get Healing Whale, though, and I'm definitely making due with my current set. Especially now that I have the newly-buffed Lightning Rook, mwa-ha-ha-ha...

Wow there are a lot of ...s in this post guess that's nothing new for me though anywho

And heck I cried like a baby all throughout this. I'm not ashamed to admit it. TWEWY feels are a potent poison, my friend. And so is all the sass in this game, like holy Kanohi, for real, man.

I'll be starting the Secret Reports sub-quests shortly. After this, maybe I'll have a better idea of how to compare the versions, but as is I'd say they both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Solo Remix is legit.

Hm, perhaps I'll be able to see Hype-chan in person after all...

Another Friendly Reminder

Y'all need to chill the heck out

Posted Image

There isn't anything I can say that hasn't already been said probably but whatevs

Maybe it's real. Maybe it isn't. We're not going to know for sure until we get an official word and/or it's 2015. A little hopeful excitement is understandable, as is a little pessimistic displeasure should it be true, along with some irritation should you think it's fake.

But seriously: chill out

People of all stances have been taking this way too seriously. Even if it is fake, that doesn't give you the right to chew out those believing it. Even if it is legit, saying it's going to be A. the greatest thing since sliced bread OR B. a sign of the apocalypse is something you're guaranteed to be wrong about.

I get that we all love Bionicle, but for crying out loud, people!

Harmonic Convergence Did It

Okay, now that I’ve seen the new episodes of Legend of Korra, it’s time to make a long, spoiler-filled blog post about them!

I’m trying to be more optimistic about things lately, so I’ll say I’m excited about this new book. I will, however, reserve the right to roll my eyes at the mention of Harmonic Convergence for a while longer, but maybe I’ll work that out too. :P
