Tales of Grinding

I made it through Chapter 3 in Bravely Default. It wasn't easy. Still, quite an interesting piece of the story--don't want to reveal too much, but between Tiz's mental state showing signs of deterioration and Edea coming face-to-face with her former master, needless to say it drew me in quite effectively. I'm starting Chapter 4 now, but I'm still doing terribly, so I've resorted to grinding to gain levels and Job Levels. Also, something interesting that struck me, but it's spoilers for Chapters 3 and 4!

The scene establishing that awakening the Earth Crystal will shut off the white magic cables keeping Eternians so healthy. We've already seen some unintentional side effects of awakening the crystals with the mythril mines drying up, but that was not something the heroes anticipated and was quickly spun into a benefit. This, however, is something they are made aware of beforehand, is unquestionably a detriment, and they have to confront that and make a decision. I wonder if maybe they made their decision a little quickly, but as Edea's mother already said not to worry about her and the whole world is in pretty deep trouble, maybe that justifies it. I just think it's interesting to see the main characters we quickly accepted as "the good guys" being forced to make a decision that isn't quite so clear-cut.

This isn't really a spoiler, but I actually sat down and read through the Enigmatic Writings in D's Journal finally. I think I have a theory of who wrote it, and possibly who Ringabel may actually be...

Also I finally got the pun in Edea's name after seeing that both her parents have pun names. I like her even more now!

So, Job Report:

-Agnes: Currently White Mage Lv 10 with Singing; other Jobs include Freelancer Lv 5, Time Mage Lv 9, Summoner Lv 9, Salve-Maker Lv 9, Performer Lv 9

-Tiz: Currently Salve-Maker Lv 6 with Summoning; other Jobs include Freelancer Lv 2, Monk Lv 2, Black Mage Lv 9, Thief Lv 9, Merchant Lv 9, Time Mage Lv 9, Summoner Lv 9, Red Mage Lv 9

-Ringabel: Currently Spell Fencer Lv 3 with Hunting; other Jobs include Monk Lv 9, Knight Lv 9, Thief Lv 9, Ranger Lv 9, Valkyrie Lv 9, Pirate Lv 3, Ninja Lv 9

-Edea: Currently White Mage Lv 7 with Sword Magic; other Jobs include Freelancer Lv 2, Knight Lv 9, Spell Fencer Lv 9, Valkyrie Lv 9, Red Mage Lv 9, Pirate Lv 9, Swordmaster Lv 9

I think I may keep grinding until Agnes learns White Magic Lv 5, since I kinda really need that...but that could take awhile. Everyone is Level 51 (except for Ringabel, who dies the most and is stuck at 50), but I'm not sure if that's good or bad at this point in the game.

As for Norende, using my previous tactics and adding in the fact that I spent today driving up to a small anime convention where I gained 20 more villagers, I actually completed reconstruction as I was typing this entry! I was kinda hoping I would get a special thing, or at the very least a message box telling me I'm done, but oh well. It's still neat.

I'm beginning spring break now, so hopefully I can clear Bravely Default before the Steins;Gate visual novel releases at the end of the month. That's going to take most of my attention then. For now, I'm jut going to grind like heck until I get impatient and try moving on.

I'm still on chapter two. Magic seems to be the most effective mode of attack. I think Ringabel needs to have sword magic as he sucks the most right now out of all of my characters. His kightness fails against water monsters.

Actually I did switch him to monk and he has been hitting decently, but meh.

I didn't have that much trouble with Chapter 4; I had to grind for awhile in Chapter 3 because Qada was massacring my crew, but otherwise I haven't had too much trouble against bosses until Chapter 5, where suddenly they became all-out (but still beatable).

I don't understand what's up with both of you having a bad Ringabel, though - he's always been my best attacker (as a Monk) or the longest lasting in the case of the others being KO'd (as a Merchant) or my best supporter (as a Performer) for me. :P

Yes. Ringabels that have decent character traits. Oh, and good offense too. =P

I got him some knuckles and that upped his attack so he's finally getting in some triple digits. Maybe when he levels up, he can be decent as a monk? I am toying with switching him to Valkerie at some point as that worked for ne in the demo, but right now I need to survive chapter three. Edea and Tiz are getting close to level nine, so after this chapter I might have to switch them around which sucks because Edea is my best offense and Tiz is my white mage. Speaking of which, I never did get the red mage asterisk in chapter two. The quest seems to be active in the city, but after I stayed at the inn and Ringading wanted tips on flirting from a fellow dingus, he seemed to vanish off the face of the earth. I figure I'll level up in chapter three then go back and destroy him later.

Also, Bravely Default... aka the game where everyone dies. =/ I am going to be sooo bummed out before this game is through with me... and why do I think Airy is the villain?

Also I am clueless as to why Eternian forces hate Vestals so much. Living a secluded, peaceful life maintaining the order of the natural world (with floating crystals which are totally natural) doesn't strike "evil witch" to me. CONSPIRACY!

Ah, yes the Red Mage. That was frustrating for a number of reasons. You need to return to the city at night to encounter him again, which will lead to a stalking montage that may end in failure. If it doesn't work, you need to wait until its night again, trigger the scene again, and hope it works that time. It's a pretty straight shot from there, though it turns horrifying very quickly. We do get the briefest glimmer of hope for Ringabel, though! Also Red Mage is a very nice job. Don't let the character you get it from dissuade you from using it! :P

Airy's attitude can definitely raise some questions. Nothing's come of it as of where I am in the story (about mid(?) Chapter 4 now), so I wonder if anything will come of it in the future...

I'm not entirely sure about the vestal hatred either. However, it seems that this all started when Edea's father took command, and there's an optional town near Eternia where you can get some backstory that might explain it. Currently waiting for confirmation of it during the main story.
