Gather the Dragon Balls Again

It was just announced that Akira Toriyama will be working on a new anime sequel to Dragon Ball, entitled "Dragon Ball Super", starting this July, confirming previous rumors that a new series was being worked on. Details are currently very scarce, but we have been told that the plot will be a short time after the defeat of Kid Buu; presumably it will follow the recent movies "Battle of Gods" and "Revival of F", both of which are set in that general timeframe and heavily involved Toriyama.

On one hand, this is huge news! Dragon Ball is one of the single most recognizable anime in history, and while the franchise was certainly never at a standstill, seeing it return to television is an unforeseen development that can help get a new generation hooked on it.

Honestly though there's a part of me that feels bad for Toriyama, who apparently thought this series was going to end long ago and seems to have accepted its fate as the eternal cash cow. :P

I really am excited, though. There was a plot point teased at the end of Battle of Gods that doesn't seem to be addressed in the new movie, so I'm hoping that Super will follow up on that. I can accept that there will definitely be new transformations--I will relish in them no matter how redundant they get, most likely--but I really hope the new movie's plot of bringing back Frieza isn't indicative of the arcs we'll be seeing. Bringing back old enemies for fights incredibly similar to their original arc is something that I'm just not really on-board with.

And of course, the last time we got a new Dragon Ball anime, people didn't take so well to it! :D

(I mean GT wasn't all bad, but I'm definitely not broken up that it's looking less and less canon with each passing year.)

Doesn't Battle of the Gods acknowledge Pan's existence, though? I'm sure they'll make it work with GT for the most part. I kinda liked GT, although it got pretty silly toward the end (sillier than usual).

A new anime is going to be... interesting, but I'll give it a shot.

Soo many people seem to forget that Pan was born by the end of DBZ. She was in the world tournament child division after the defeat of Buu

Yeah, young Pan was in the epilogue of Z, and she's been acknowledged in both new movies as an unborn/newborn child.  The main thing that nulls out GT is increased power levels and forms like Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, which we probably would have seen Goku and Vegeta using at that point in the timeline and would have probably outclassed all those opponents we needed Super Saiyan 4 to fight.  This applies to Frieza too, with his new Golden form and his brief appearance in GT.  It still might be workable, but since the general opinion of the show is pretty negative I find it hard to imagine they'll be trying all that hard to stay in line with it.

With Tomino's return to Gundam in Reconguista and Toriyama's return in Super I'm just waiting for news on Tezuka returning from the dead with a new Astroboy.
