staff, except Im not and 1 more...
Well, it has been a good run on BZP, but sadly I feel that I can no longer perform my staff duties. Ever since Sandy hit I've tried to keep focused on my life and getting that back together. And real life always comes first.
This isn't a decision I've made lightly, I've thought about this for a long time. The BZPower staff has always needed a certain level of fabulous.
I've had a lot of great experiences and I've made a lot of friends through this website, and I'm not planning on leaving any time soon even though I have left the staff.
This is a decision that also allows me to look to the future and focus on my own website.
I've updated my sidebar with some dates and shiny images... you know I never did earn that Copper Huna, I skipped that step when I was promoted ages ago. :P
(Although Now I can just cause trouble. :3)
I do want to say though that I love all of the friends that I've made on BZPower, every single one of you is awesome.

Hurricane Sandy, Lego, Minifig and 1 more...
So recently I managed to obtain some of the Lego Minifigs from Series 10. Sealed. Of course while sealed both Aleks and myself felt each package and determined what was in each package. We have decided to sell them on BZPower to you guys. This is money that will be going towards a good cause and that is helping us exist a little bit longer as we try to get back in our home from Hurricane Sandy.
Minifigs Available:
$10 – Medusa - 2 Available
$5 – Roman Commander - 6 Available
$5 – Tomahawk Warrior - 9 Available
$5 – Skydiver - 6 Available
$7 – Paintball Player - 3 Available
$5 – Sad Clown - 1 Available
$5 – Revolutionary Soldier - 2 Available
$5 – Baseball Fielder - 4 Available
$9 – Trendsetter - 2 Available
$5 – Decorator - 5 Available
$5 – Motorcycle Mechanic - 9 Available
If you are interested, send me a PM. This is first come, first served. All prices USD. Some prices are flexible, especially if you purchase more than one minifig. However, every penny helps us out. Shipping still needs to be estimated, but should be under $1-2.

Life Update

still alive
So... what has been going on in my life for the past month?
Well, we've been running around to appointments almost every day for various things. It has been very exhausting and there hasn't been much time to relax. Needless to say I haven't been on BZPower much, nor have I been able to finish something I've been meaning to get done.
Sadly, the government still sucks at getting us aid regarding Sandy. FEMA money for housing is going to run out soon... and insurance is still trying to not pay anything. Needless to say money is running out and I will be honest I am freaking terrified of what might happen.
In my limited free time and relaxation time I have been playing a few video games on the Wii U and 3DS, in part thanks to a birthday gift of an eShop card from a friend. That went to Animal Crossing/Fire Emblem DLC/The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Ages. I have also been enjoying my 2nd Super Metroid playthrough. So gaming has been a good way to relieve a bit of stress. Heck aside from a few other places on the internet it has been the only way of stress relief for us.

Hopefully I can get my big gaming related project online soon. This is something that I've had in my heart in various forms for years. Seeing it come to life has definitely helped keep me going.
I would also like to thank Jedi Master J. He is still awesome and seriously one of the best people I know.
Anyway, I'm going to hope that I can be online a bit more this month. If anything I will be posting my E3 thoughts... if I'm not playing Animal Crossing.
Can we just move to an Animal Crossing town? It seems really peaceful and stable and we could really use that.
My avatar on here and my twitter avatar have something to do with my secret project... I wonder what it is?

The past month

Posted by Kohaku , in BZPower, Lego, Rant, Real Life, Video Games May 05 2013 · 44 views
The past month has been very busy for me. I've been exhausted most of the time and have only been home in the evenings. That said there are some (very short) highlights.
I've been playing a lot of Lego City: Undercover for the Wii U... I wonder just how good that game is?
The Rayman challenges app on the Wii U is a lot of fun too.
I got to hang out in NYC with my boyfriend and an awesome friend yesterday. My legs hurt from all the walking.
Iron Man 3 is awesome go watch it.
As for life things... still nothing new on the house front and we can't fix things until the insurance company gives us money. And we can't accept the small offers they have given us as you can't fix a house with the numbers they are offering and ahhhhhh.
Free Comic book day brought us free comics.
The project Aleks and I are working on now has a mascot character and I am so excited for it.
Jedi Master J is an awesome friend and one of the coolest people ever.
Also it is my Birthday and this month feels good. This month feels good to me.

Purple, Bullying
I was bullied as a kid, I don't want others to go through the same thing. It sucks and it leads to depression and even suicidal thoughts.

I'm going purple and you are free to join me.

How Homophobia Hurts Everyone

Posted by Kohaku , in BZPower, FABULOUS, Real Life Sep 21 2012 · 2,149 views
Tolerance, Love not hate
First off, before I start I would like to point you all to a fantastic entry by Gato on the problem with the redefining of homophobia.

Let’s face it, homophobia can be really damaging for LGBT youths and even for people who identify as straight. Intolerance hurts everyone. Even if you think you are right in terms of using religion. To tell someone that you don’t accept a part of them means so much more to that person, it means you don’t accept them.

There has been a lot of homophobic bullying in the world and it leads to a lot of tragedy. Intolerance accounts for the reason so many LGBT youths are homeless and it is a leading cause as to why LGBT youths have one of the highest rates of suicide. The Suicide Prevention Resource Center synthesized these studies and estimated that between 30 and 40% of LGBT youth, depending on age and sex groups, have attempted suicide. That is an alarmingly high amount of youths considering that the rate in the general population is around 1-2%.

Even such phrases as, “That’s so gay!” are proven to be harmful towards LGBT youths. Just recently there was a study on the effects of the phrase conducted by the University of Michigan. Those who heard it more frequently were more likely to report feelings of isolation, as well as negative health symptoms, such as headaches, poor appetite, or eating problems.

Study author Michael Woodford, assistant professor of social work at U-M, describes the results:

“Given the nature of gay-lesbian-bisexual stigma, sexual minority students could already perceive themselves to be excluded on campus and hearing “that’s so gay” may elevate such perceptions. “That’s so gay” conveys that there is something wrong with being gay. And, hearing such messages about one’s self can cause stress, which can manifest in headaches and other health concerns.”

Clearly even simple phrases can be so hurtful. I ask you, please think before you speak. Or type as is the case on BZPower.

Homophobia Hurts All of Us

(The following list has been adapted from Warren J. Blumenfeld, ed. Homophobia: How We All Pay the Price.)

Within the numerous forms of oppression, members of the target group (minority groups) are oppressed, while on some level members of the dominant group are hurt. Although the effects of the oppression differ qualitatively for specific target and dominant groups, in the end everyone loses.

1. Homophobia locks all people into rigid gender roles that inhibit creativity and self-expression.

2. Homophobia compromises the integrity of heterosexual people by pressuring them to treat others badly, actions that go against our basic humanity.

3. Homophobia limits our ability to form close relationships with members of one’s own sex.

4. Homophobia generally limits communications with a significant portion of the population and, more specifically, limits family relationships.

5. Homophobia prevents some lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people from developing an honest self-identity, and adds to the pressure to marry and/or have children, which places undue stress on themselves and their families.

6. Homophobia results in the elimination of any discussion of the lives and sexuality of LGBT people in the curriculum, keeping important information from all students.

7. Homophobia can be used to stigmatize, silence, and, on occasion, target people who are perceived or defined by others as lesbian or gay, but who are, in actuality, heterosexual.

8. Homophobia prevents heterosexuals from accepting the benefits and gifts offered by LGBT people: theoretical insights, social and spiritual visions, contributions in the arts and culture, to religion, to family life, indeed, to all parts of society.

9. Homophobia (along with racism, sexism, classism, etc.) inhibits a unified and effective governmental and societal response to HIV transmission and AIDS.

10. Homophobia takes energy away from more positive activities.

11. Homophobia inhibits appreciation of other types of diversity, making it unsafe for everyone because each person has unique traits not considered mainstream or dominant. Therefore, we are all hurt when any one of us is disrespected.

(End list, back to Kohaku’s ranting.)

Why did I choose to add this list? Honestly, in its current form, I can’t really see a way to improve upon this list. It shows the ways that homophobia hurts everyone. It hurts me, it hurts you, it hurts your best friend. It just plain hurts.

Now, I’m going to tell a bit of a story that I haven’t told anyone. Ever. I’ll keep it short and to the point.

When I was in middle and high school, I was bullied. I was bullied all the time, I was called derogatory names and in some cases physically assaulted. At the time I honestly didn’t know why I had been singled out. I didn’t even know what being gay was. I lost a lot of innocence back then and it continued for years. I hated school and I honestly hated life. I thought about suicide plenty of times. And came close to attempting it.

However as time went on I gained two important friends on BZPower, Alku and Kinali. How important were these friends? Honestly, they helped me keep things together more than they know. Even after I became staff here they helped me keep it together. If it weren’t for them and their support I might not be here. Those two friends gave me some much needed support and through every experience with them we have grown as people and as friends.

Homophobia in any sense hurts us all. So please think before you speak.

Think about it.

“How will this hurt people around me?”

“How will this hurt myself?”

“How would I feel if I was in their shoes?”

Please, think about how the words you say can hurt others. Think about your beliefs and how they can be hurtful. Think about it.

BZPower at New York Comic Con

Posted by Kohaku , in NYCC, BZPower Sep 14 2012 · 278 views
BZPower, NYCC, New York Comic Con
Hey all! I've got some news to share.

First off if you are purchasing tickets you should do so before 11:59PM EST. Otherwise you have to wait in a long line to pick them up, which would not be fun. Tonight is the mailing deadline.

Second, the event has been added to the BZPower Community Calendar! Please RSVP on every day that you will be attending! This will let me know how many members plan on attending and on what days they will attend. It will help us plan the member meetup accordingly.

Original Entry as follows:

For the past few years I've been going to New York Comic Con, heck last year I did a small piece for the front page on BZPower as there was a small amount of Lego to be seen.

This year I want to do more than just that. I would like to see if anyone is interested in a BZPower meetup at New York Comic Con.

Last year the event drew more than 105,000 visitors at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, and that number has been steadily increasing. However usually before the event they sell out of all of the tickets before the show. Earlier this year I picked up the 4-Day passes, and you want that time, because it would be impossible to see everything otherwise.

New York Comic Con will take place on October 11-14, 2012.

Online Ticket Prices are as follows:
4-Day Pass: $85
3-Day Pass: $65
Friday: $35
Saturday: $50
Sunday: $35

If you are interested you can follow this link(link will take you to the NYCC website) to purchase tickets. Tickets ship at the beginning of September, if you don't want to wait in a huge line to pick up your tickets I suggest you order them soon.

For a bit more info: Directions and Hotels. Those are two very useful links if you need directions or a place to stay. It should be noted that staying at a hotel is very pricey, if you have to travel to get to the convention center that might be more worth it.

For example, I live on Long Island and we take the Long Island Railroad into the city. Round trip it costs about $17 and an hour of travel time each way. This is much cheaper than staying in a hotel for $250 per night. Staying at a hotel outside of New York City will be a lot cheaper, you just have to worry about getting to the convention center. If you come in via Penn Station you can walk to the convention center.

Now, if anyone is interested or goes to New York Comic, feel free to comment here to say that you are interested in a BZPower meetup. If there is interest in this, the idea will move forward to discussion of location of meetup and date/time.

If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them here or send me a PM.
