Elven Castle -- First Draft

It's only been twenty days since my first Ideas project was approved and already I'm working on something new, inspired by something I never thought I'd be inspired by: the whining of Brickset AFOLs.     Introducing the Elven Castle, a set idea based on the beloved Castles of Lego Castle past, with an elven twist. Much inspired by the works of Tolkien, I wanted it to look less like it was made of wood and more like it was grown from it. The build is very modular and a little repetitive, but thi

Fossil Museum Update #1: Updated Spinosaurus

A concerned commenter on LEGO Ideas said they couldn't help but question the scale of the dinosaurs. To help people better gauge the scale, I made this size chart. The sizes aren't perfect, but Deinonychus, Stegosaurus, and Apatosaurus all fall reasonably close to accurate scale to a minifigure. Spinosaurus, however, was small enough compared to what it should be that I felt the need to fix it.   Along with fixing the scale to a minifigure, this build also fixes the wonky legs and sparse spine

commencing micromanagement

the reason my hand is in the picture is I found that the Micromanager is both top-heavy and front-heavy and thus falls flat on its face when you try to stand it up. I suspect that's why there are no movie-accurate micromanagers in the sets.

The Line That Never Went Anywhere (Even Though It Should Have)

In Mask of Light, there is one line spoken by Makuta that seems like it sets up a mystery. He says, "Sleep spares him [Mata Nui] pain. Awake, he suffers."   That's interesting. Nobody ever thought there could be a reason for Makuta to put him to sleep besides a power grab. What pain does sleep spare him? What else happened to Mata Nui to cause this pain?   But nothing happened. Nobody ever alluded to that line, no pain of the sort mentioned comes up. (I suppose Mata Nui's worsening condition cou

Bring Back Hero Factory Club

So, as of today, Bionicle's return in 2015 is confirmed. Which means LEGO is banning the Hero Factory toyline, even though it's story didn't even get to finish. That's why I want all the fans of Hero Factory to come together and barrage LEGO with complaints. Demand LEGO finish Hero Factory! Bring back my favorite toyline! Force LEGO to repeal the ban on Hero Factory! Who's with me?

PSA

If your story about the genus Brontosaurus being revived is accompanied by a tail-dragging, swamp-dwelling, camarasaur-headed, wrinkly elephantine monstrosity then I hate you.

BZPower Comics Culture

Let's start this off simply: I have been a member of the BZPower comics community since December of 2007, or almost seven years now. I've been involved in this community for longer than Dark709 at this point (as he started making comics in 2004, and left the site in '09-'10). As such, I'd like to think I've learned a lot about the interesting sort of culture that has formed there for practically a decade now.   If I had to describe it, and if I weren't prone to theatrics at the time, I'd describ

a quick WIP

After the T. rex skeleton thing, Izaak suggested I make a whole bunch of minifig-scale dino skeletons, so I started. I then put it on hold because it ended up being more difficult than I anticipated, and only just now got back to it, with the first almost-completed skeleton to show for it.   The white probably won't stick around; it makes it recognizable as bones, but fossils aren't white. They're brown, or tan, or some rocky color. The final version will probably be Brick Yellow, Sand Yellow, o

Cool Shocking Non-Cliché Endings To Stories

Relevant to recent discussions

(I edited out a racist word, though I left the N, and I hope that's ok.)   Basically, don't bring up MLK Jr. until you know EVERYTHING he stood for, or you'll bring him up in a way that would have him rolling in his grave.   I'm leaving this entry unlocked, so I hope y'all can behave.

Jurassic World: Welcome to the early 1900's

I have said many a word of how Jurassic World seeks to bring dinosaur science of the 1980's to the public. I apologize, for I have spoken in error.   They're going back further than that.     That's right, it's a tail-draggin' dinosaur, right out of the early 1900s, for your viewing pleasure. Mind you, this tail posture is impossible for Stegosaurus (with one of the most compelling reasons for this being that its cloaca would be crushed), and has been known to be so by palaeontology since the D

Oh, AFOLs...

Potential Akamai 2015 Starting Point

The grey Technic bits should be an almost-perfect stand-in for the gearbox piece. I haven't tested the stability of it IRL because I obviously can't, but the torso should be fit snugly against the gearboxes, even if it doesn't have a fixed connection to it. Hopefully the new heads will lift the face out of the "scarf" enough to not inhibit movement. The colors are messy because I wanted it to be clear I was using pieces from all three. The gold pieces are obviously stand-ins for the new gold arm

Natural Selection

(you probably thought this was going to be a rant about how wonderfully true evolution is but don't worry it's not)   Last night, on a late-night whim (that also led to a somewhat hare-brained scheme related to starting the Crow Agricultural Revolution), I wrote a bit of a short horror story. I say it's a horror story but honestly I may have gone to subtle with it and ended up with a multi-paragraph description of evolution. Anyway, point is, I wrote a short story.   Here it is.   I'd appreciate

Brickfair VA Recap

I was initially going to write a recap each day, but I turned out to not have the energy required, so here's just an overall recap.   First things first: I am never riding the bus again. It's noisy, the bus rattles like it's being shaken apart, and some dude vomited in one on the way home. There was nothing pleasant about this experience.   The convention, meanwhile, was quite enjoyable. One of the first things I purchased was a big bag of Galidor parts, and boy did I have fun. I even won a MISB

Palaeontologists RUINED Dinosaurs!

Remember real dinosaurs? I don't mean that upright-walking bipedal garbage, I mean this. Giant iguanas are so much cooler than what palaeontologists have reduced dinosaurs to. Active lifestyles? As if they could possibly know that from JUST BONES. Sick of all the sensationalism in palaeontology.

"ohwunners"

I've noticed, especially on tumblr, a lot of people attempting to push the term "ohwunners" as a term for people who irrationally dislike the new Bionicle. Its origins are obvious; it comes from the term "genwunner" used in the Transformers and Pokemon fandoms, only with "ohwun" used to allude to Bionicle's first year.   To me, that seems like a misnomer. People who loved 2001 above all other years actually seem to be the most vocal supporters of the new Bionicle. In fact, if anyone has shown th

How should a story make you think?

(This is related to the latest in S&T arguments, but reading the argument is not necessarily a prerequisite for understanding this entry. Additionally, while it was sparked by something bonesiii said, this entry isn't necessarily directed at him.)   I've heard that Bionicle was supposed to take some work to understand a few times now now, and it just doesn't click with me. When I think of a story that requires work to understand, I think of Snowpiercer, with its rich, deep-running themes tha

Premier Membership Giveaway

So, thanks to the convention circuit, I have a free six-month premier membership. However, I already have Lifetime, so I may as well give it to someone else.   I don't want people just saying "give it to me", though, so to enter, please give me a one paragraph essay about Chrom in the comments below. Winner will be selected randomly, so don't feel pressured to perform here; write whatever Chromes to mind.   (That said, MLA citation is a nice touch.)   Let's say you need to get your essays done b

Have I complained about Jurassic World here yet?

You groan. "No," you grouch, "and I was hoping you never would." However, you clicked on an entry about Jurassic Park by me knowing full well what that entails, so chances are you're going to read the whole thing anyway.   Jurassic World is the latest in a series of movies that have probably done as much harm to public perception of dinosaurs as they have good. However, its impact will be worse than the previous three, almost entirely because of when it's being released.   Jurassic Park, for all

"Old-Fashioned"

There is a very big difference between "old-fashioned" and "outdated and bigoted", and for some reason people who are the latter like to claim they are the former. I'm here to point out the difference between the two that I thought was very clear, but for some reason people like to muddy. I'm going to give you some examples of worldviews, and then explain whether it's old-fashioned, or just straight-up bigoted.   Let's start easy.   People of different races are fundamentally different in ways t
