Kiina And Berix

(Original Post date September 21st)     So the newest additions to my Bionicle collection come straight from the new movie... well, not quite, but they both have roles in it, with some of the more annoying lines too, I might add. Oh, and they're both blue. So let this be a duel set review! I'll start off with the bigger of the two..   Kiina   Kiina, the only female set of the year. She's a major character in the movie, even if her voice made me cringe through most of the previews. (T

The LEGO Movie 2 Collectible Minifigures

It should be fairly obvious that I have an obsession with collecting figs, and when I heard that stores in my area were releasing them early, I kinda jumped on it. The first store I visited didn’t have any, but the second one had a small selection, and I was able to grab 9 of the ones I wanted.     First I want to address the bag issues. It was rumored that these figs were going to be double bagged like the UniKitty figs, which makes it difficult to tell them apart. But based on my selection, n

Review: 70639 Street Race of Snake Jaguar

I was planning to do a full review of this set, but after sitting on it for two months, I realize I don’t have an awful lot to say about it. Soooo... I’m saving myself the effort and just doing a short blog review.     This set consists of two motorcycles, a popular vehicle to create in the theme. (There’s generally at least one motorcycle set per year, usually around the $20 mark.) This set goes for $29.99 and has 308 pieces. There’s not exactly a lot of great pieces here, but white, dark azur

Umarak the Mosaic!

More ideas for a potential colab mosaic for this year that's looking less and less likely...   --   A couple of different variations that could be done for good ol' Umarak. He's looking to be one of the more popular sets in the winter wave, so why not glorify his might in a mosaic, eh? Plus, y'know, mask of control.   This are all preliminary designs, so there's be a fair amount of color swapping to make it affordable. (Oh, they're all 3x3 baseplate / 96x96 stud mosaics). I do realize that Umara

Review: Flash Speeder

The other day I ordered the 75091 Flash Speeder Star Wars set. I was planning to pick it up anyway, but I decided to wait until the Star Wars collectible poster promo, so I got that too. The set was actually pretty delightful, and I'm glad I made the purchase. Although, honestly, I don't remember this vehicle from the movie very much, but it's green, so yay!     First off, the figs. I may or may not have wanted this set primarily for the medium nougat not-super-frowny head of the Naboo Security

Gali Masters Mosaic: Final

This past weekend at Bricks Cascade, the collaborative Gali Masters Mosaic finally came together. (A little last minute too, with the ones being sent in arriving just in the nick of time and another one requiring some last minute updates.) I haven't got pictures for everything else yet, but time to present this mosaic in its full glory!     And it wouldn't be a BZPower mosaic without a group pict of all the builders. (Yes, ALL of them, even the ones that weren't physically there.)     From lef

Final Gali Masters Mosaic Design

So I made some changes based on suggestions by some members (ironically ones who probably won't participate) and now we have this design:           Sections: [01][02][03] [04][05][06] [07][08][09] [10][11][12]   People who've remarked interest:   Xccj: Pieces 05, 08, and 09 Chocolate Frogs: 10 Black Six: 01, 02 Letagi: 03, 06 Kayru: 07 Based Goomy: 12 Danny316p: 11   List of sections with difficulty and color requirements:   Piece 01: (Medium) Black Six Claimed. 20 Questions Round 2 Part 2

EDIT: Bumped cause you guys haven't figured it out yet!!   Let's play 20 Questions! I think you should know the basic rules; I'm thinking of something Bionicle related, and you ask questions to help narrow it down! Here are some of the more detailed rules:   1: The questions can only be yes or no questions. So "Is he pink" works but "what color is he" doesn't.   2: There can only be ONE question per post, and no double posting.   3: I will edit my answer into every body's post. You can only add

Bionicle Window Decals?

How can I make this happen??   I've seen other pop culture decals on cars and I'm thinking I would like to have the original Kanohi on the back of mine. But how easy / difficult is it to get something like that printed? (And not bumper stickers... window decals are easy to move around if need be.)   Also kinda surprised I didn't blog at all in April or May. I mean, I've been a'lurkin' but just haven't posted stuff I guess. Been busy with life and work mostly work.   And, since I guess I haven't

Review: Attack on Isengard

Read for another mini review? Today I look at this cool set that I picked up the other day which is clearly from Lord of the Rings. I believe it is 76020: Attack on Isengard.     So this set is suppose to represent the scenes from the second LotR movie The Two Towers where Isengard is attacked. You get some enemies defending their mining equipment, as well as an Ent with a Hobbit companion. There's a lot to like here, but there are also a ton of discrepancies, so many that it makes you wond

Gali Masters Mosaic?

Sections: [01][02][03] [04][05][06] [07][08][09] [10][11][12]   So, what do you think? This has been recolored to better fit a selection of colors that are easy to utilize. )The red is just outlining the 32x32 sections.) The blue on the shoulders / thighs is dark azure, because I have a lot of that color in bricks. I expect to do at least one of those sections to use my supply, and I can probably cover all of them it nobody else has enough of the bricks in that color. I also made the skull spide

Review: Jasmine’s Exotic Palace

The Disney Princess theme has reused the Friends Mini-doll design, but while the characters were recognizable, I never really got into the theme last year. But then they released an Alladin set, 41061 Jasmine's Exotic Palace, and since itwas one of my favorite Disney movies, I decided that I should pick this one up.   There are quite a few small builds, and most are fairly unimpressive. There’s a tree, a stand for the lamp, a fountain, the magic carpet, a shopping stand, and a palace entrance. M

Onua Mistika

Next up...     Alright, the final Nuva set of the year, Onua. How does he stack up?   Well, first of all, Onua's tall. Yeah, TALL! I complained that Tahu and Gali were a little too short with their Piraka bodies, but Onua has the opposite problem. He probably could've pulled off a Piraka body, but his current design makes him tower above the other Toa... even the Phantoka. Well, not quite, but he's eye level with Lewa and Kopaka.   So you must think that I think his body is messed up.

Angled Mosaics

Man, this concept is just too cool. I'm not exactly treading new ground here: I only know about this technique because of Arthur Gugick's Anakin/Darth Vader and Batman/Joker mosaics. But although the idea seems basic enough, I haven't seen anybody else do this, but I want to experiment with new methods. So far he's covered the whole two-opposite-people-in-one-mosaic deal, but there are other things you could do. Day/Night. Before and After. Any two images that would juxtapose each other wo

Who Has Cheese Slopes?

Oh look, I'm talking about lenticular cheese slope mosaics again.   These mosaics are hard to design, hard to make, and also quite hard on the pocket book. That's because filling up a huge baseplate with cheese slopes really adds up, and when each one costs ten cents but you need thousands... yeah, not cheap. But what if you only had to fill out a smaller section, like say a 16x16 plate?   Would anybody be interested in a collaborative lenticular mosaic design? People would only have to make sma

100% Complete

So today I went to the Lego store in Dallas to take advantage of the double VIP points. I also went with two fellow interns to show them the wonderful world of Lego. (See, Elly and Erin, I do blog, and yes, it is mostly about Lego!)   Anyway, I got two collections completed.   After a slow start, I did manage to collect all 16 Series 9 figs. The last two were the Waiter and Caesar. I would like to do another front page review of how to find them, ext, but I am so late on these that it isn't

Review: General Grievous’ Wheel Bike

Hey, heres a short review of 75040 General Grievous Wheel Bike. It's short cause I want to talk about the set, but am too lazy to draft up an official one for the front page.     If you hate repetitive building, avoid this set at all costs. Like seriously, there's a lot of repetition in this build. But while its annoying, it makes sense. I mean, you're BUILDING the wheel, not just using a pre-made tire. So embrace the repetition, from the two similar bases on either side of the wheel to the fou

New Apartment

A lot went on at Bricks Cascade this weekend, but it's not over yet so I'll blog about that later. For now, I have other news; I'm moving into a new apartment.   I've been commuting to my job in down town Portland from my parent's house, which is 1 hour one-way on a no-traffic day. Basically, it's a pain, so I looked into moving closer. I found a place that's reletively affordable (assuming I don't blow all my income on lego) and also close to the MAX line (light rail public transportation),

BrickCon Colab?

I know BrickCon has done some pretty cool collaborations in the past, but the closest the Bionicle gang has come is to build a mosaic. But here's an idea I have, so feel free to critique it, add your own ideas, suggest improvements, ext.   So I built this tower out of Bionicle limb pieces and reinforced with Hero Factory limbs and liftarms. It's 3-4 feet tall, and relatively sturdy, but bend a few joints wrong and it'll bend over. It's nothing super awesome to look at, but it's tall for somet

20 Questions Round 2 Part 1

I did this a while back and it was a lot of fun, and I want to do something more in my blog besides lame rantings of things. So let's do this!!   Let's play 20 Questions! I think you should know the basic rules; I'm thinking of something Bionicle related, and you ask questions to help narrow it down! (Heck, might be slightly easier this time since we can know everything there is to know about the Bionicle universe.) Here are some of the more detailed rules:   1: The questions can only be yes
