Well It Would Help

I don't know about you, but if someone adds me as a contact on Flickr, I don't immediately add them back. I look at their photostream and consider the value it gives me to have updates from it.

The point is: If you want me to even consider adding you as a contact, you'd best allow me to look at some photos first. If I walk in and only see, "This member doesn't have anything viewable to you, but here are some from their friends," I'm just going to walk out, never worrying about you again.

That explains why you have over 400 contacts :P jk Thats probably the smart thing to do, personally I dont mind. As I like to be a friendly person in general, especially in flickr :)

I don't see how it has to do with friendliness.

As for Friends lists, I add people if they're my friend. Not because I want them to be my friend.

Flickr contacts =/= friends. I have impersonal relationships with many Flickrites. Very few I actually know IRL. Unlike a social networking friends list, where you interact about various aspects of life with people you are (hopefully) close to, contacts on Flickr, from what I gather, are a way to keep track of creative builders, anticipating what they will build next. Then their latest uploaded pictures appear in the contact photo stream and you see it.
