Alberta, Canada (CNN) -- Video game fans may have something to look forward to in 2012. Canadian video game developer Bioware, who worked with Lucas Arts for the highly-acclaimed Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic games, has announced a director for a film based on Mass Effect, their own science fiction series, which has been given similarly positive reviews.

The film, which Warner Bros. acquired the rights to in May of last year, has been announced earlier today in a press release by the developer to have gone into production for a mid-2012 release, with German filmmaker Uwe Boll directing the adaptation. Boll, who has a reputation for movie adaptations of video games, has been a common target of harsh criticism by the video game community, with allegations of inaccurate adaptations being commonplace.

"We have every faith in Mr. Boll as the director of Mass Effect," said a representative of Bioware in a press release. "Though in the past the accuracy of his work has been a common complaint by video game fans, we've given him the assistance of many of our writers, who will help with writing the screenplay for the film, and the end product should do the Mass Effect series justice."

Boll has yet to issue a statement of his own on the matter.

Bioware, who have a reputation amongst video game fans for well-written stories and characters, a reputation many felt extended to Mass Effect, and its sequel, Mass Effect 2, released last year, with many critics lauding them as two of the best games of the last decade, citing the writing as a major strong point, was in speculation for months prior to the 2010 announcement of Warner Bros. acquisition of the rights to be looking into a movie deal for the franchise. Fan reaction to the news of the controversial director amongst the video game community has not yet been measured, but one industry insider says this move runs the risk of running the company into the ground, calling the move "Horribly ill-advised."

"If there's a company that can make an Uwe Boll movie have a good script, it would be Bioware, and it could well give Boll's career a giant step in credibility," Starts the insider optimistically, before taking a more grim turn. "However with his track record, and with the already-lauded writing of the games, why they went with him is unfathomable, and if it fails, I'm afraid it could send Mass Effect, and more importantly, Bioware, burning into the ground."

Whether the deals both with Boll and Warner Bos. are for one film, or if there are plans to make movies of both games in the series currently available, as well as the upcoming Mass Effect 3, which is set for release this December, is unknown at this time.

On the one hand, like the insider said, if anyone could make Boll make a good film, it'd be Bioware, but on the other hand, I have a very bad feeling about this.

*Sees Warner Bros*

It's obvious April Fools report. Part of me wonders if this is 100% legit, and not written up by someone, with CNN just pasted on the side to make it look official.

... Doesn't change what I already know.
