Music Recommendations

Black Six

I feel like I'm in a minority of people who still buy music on CD. I invariably rip them to my computer, but I like that physical package, the sense of permanence. I'm also a sucker for box sets and special editions because I love all the extras that always come along with them.

Anyway, I feel like it's about time to further expand my collection, and am looking for input from you guys. Below are some of the things I'm considering, but feel free to make your own recommendations.

I look forward to what you all have to say.

(Just don't let Michael see this entry - he'll say I'm silly. ;) )

I have no idea what you'd like since I don't actually know you :P

So I'll just tell you what's playing now.

Snow Patrol. I don't recommend the first two albums, or the best of one (It's only half actual Snow Patrol.). Final Straw is probably the best of the good three.

More advice: Radiohead is awful. Don't do it.

What's with all the Radiohead hate? I really enjoyed In Rainbows, which was my first real introduction to them, and have since picked up a few single tracks here and there, all of which I've enjoyed.

I do admit I need more Bowie.

Definitely grab the Zeppelin. Maybe some Hendrix. Also get Derek and the Dominoes.

I am sorely lacking in the Hendrix department. I do, however, own Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs - it's an amazing album.

Yeah, one of my favorite albums ever.

Also, if you're looking to expand your horizons, grab some prog rock. Rush, U.K., and Yes are all good places to start. If you are already a prog rock guy, grab some Mahavishnu Orchestra. They got some crazy stuff.

Rush is pretty awesome - I saw them in concert on their Snakes and Arrows tour. I've heard more than a few Yes songs that I like too. I'll look into the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but they may be a bit too extreme for my tastes. :P

If you are the classic rock kind of person, I'd solely recommend Pink Floyd. Try and acquire either The Wall or Wish You Were Here. I'd also recommend Rush, although they aren't as mainstream as most bands (enjoyable nonetheless though.) Any greatest hits album of theirs is sure to bring joy.

I have Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. I went to a Pink Floyd laser light show last fall - the show itself was a bit of a letdown but the sound system was amazing. I found myself just closing my eyes and enjoying the music most of the time.

Serious recommendations only, please. :P

The only time I don't buy my music on CD is if it never existed as a CD.

And dude.

Classic rock.

Soundtracks and orchestral (here and there as you say).

...

I have found my long-lost big brother.

*mantears*

«Takuma Nuva»

Hooray for good tastes, amirite?

As someone with a near-encyclopedic knowledge of classic rock, I have a few bands that are definitely worth checking out:

Jethro Tull. The Moody Blues. Dire Straits. R.E.M. The Guess Who. BTO (Bachman-Turner Overdrive). Lead by one of the members of The Guess Who.

Anyways, I guarantee that you'll find something here you'll like.

Also more Zep and Clapton is a must. I insist.

From the songs I've heard from those groups, most would be up my alley. Thanks.

Billy Ocean.

Caribbean Queen~

Care to elaborate more?

I recommend you take off your fake hipster glasses and start listening to modern mainstream music like everyone else. ^_^

There must be enough people not listening to modern mainstream if other genres still exist and sell well. :P

Definitely pick up on Lennon and Led Zep.

Springsteen's "Working on a dream" was nice too, if you're into his current music.

I heard the singles off the Boss' latest album and wasn't super-impressed. I dig his older stuff though.

The Travelling Wilburys.

It is amazing amazing stuff.

I already own both albums - so awesome!

Falling rocks.

Hey, it's a pretty sound.

You mean like a rockslide slowly crushing you? Doesn't sound pretty at all...

I think I heard of them once, but I can't say I've ever heard of anything by them.

The Radiohead hate is because I'm being genuine. I've listened to them, I don't get it, because I think they're awful. The lead singer's voice is hardly a voice, and the music is repetitive and an overdone stereotype of the genre.

Anyway. I'm not sure how into folk you are, but the most modern band I've been stuck on recently has been Mumford and Sons.

And I'll always recommend Death Cab for Cutie.

I think Thom Yorke has an amazing vocal range. An individual track tends to have a repetitive beat going on, but I find there's a lot of layers in their music. And to see their live performances is really impressive with the amount of instrumentation they're able to use, and use to good effect. That's just me though.

I do like Bob Dylan and Harry Chapin, and some Seger here and there. I may have to check them out.

What I've heard of Deathcab I wasn't very into, maybe you can sway me at BrickFiesta. :P

I don't know many old bands but I recommend Broken Bells and Disturbed. I like CD's better than digital files, too. They are much more tangible.

I agree with DV. I don't like Radiohead because the lead singer's voice is always so scratchy and I don't know, bland. It reminds me of the verses of Ballroom Blitz.

Anyway, Mumford and Sons are good. If you like them, or even if you don't I would highly recommend The Wedding Band.

Billy Ocean's just a 70's-80's love singer. His music is actually really catchy. It's not a serious recommendation though. :P

The only things I'd recommend are System of a Down or Metallica, but you're not into that genre.

You like soundtracks and the such you say? I'd recommend you Two Steps From H*** music, you'll surely have heard it in trailers ;) The only album on sale is Invincible though, and it's only digital release. Maybe "Cantata Mortis & God In Fire" from Dissidia Duodecim too... (as well as the separated tracks)

See and I think Ballroom Blitz is a fun and enjoyable song.

I do like some Metallica, but it's very limited. System of a Down I'm not a fan of at all though.

Well, I could give you some recommendations based on which songs you do like by Metallica. Let's hear 'em.

Now I have to remember their titles...

The only one coming to me at this early hour is Enter Sandman, although it was a pain in Rock Band or Guitar Hero, whichever one it was in. :P

Which reminds me.

Get some The Sweet greatest hits thing. Fox on the Run is such a wonderful tune.

Wherever I May Roam is a good one by Metallica that's similar to Enter Sandman.

That's pretty much the only one I can think of off the top of my head right now.
