That depends on whether or not this competition is a race

Let's see, Sonic has annoying traits all around including, but certainly not limited to:

 

Voice

General personality

Games

 

Whereas Mario is just iconic and not only unclogs toilets but also torches flytraps, stomps hammer-throwing turtles, pounds walking mushrooms and whips around giant fire-breathing, spiky-shelled, red-haired persistent turtles.

 

And he has a great mustache.

Sonic is kind of annoying, yeah, but his games are pretty cool (except the storylines, which are rather corny for my tastes ). Mario is okay, but I don't know if he even has a personality. I honestly like Sonic better.

Before 2006, I would have said Sonic. But after that game... Mario, definitely.

Sonic. I don't even care what else there's been or what else Mario's been in, Sonic has those first 3 games that are just... classic.

I would win.

Donkey Kong, anybody? Sure, probably the original Sonic games were better than the latest, but Donkey Kong is as classic as you can get. As well as the Super Mario Bros. games, I guess.
