Superman

. . .Is a alright character, I suppose, although he's really hard to write properly. For every good Superman story there are five "meh, okay" stories and four "absolutely horrible must cleanse with fire!" stories, but that one story is really, really, awesome, you know?

Best superhero is still Spider-Man, though.

I love how it frames the story as a showdown while still giving away at the top that they're actually going to team up.

I know, right?

Granted, it's a immutable rule of superhero team-ups that they have to fight each other first before they get to the team up part.

Of course. Because what fans of either want to know is who would win in a fight. Of course, neither ever wins; it's almost always a stalemate, or it gets interrupted by the foe they need to team up against.

:kaukau: One is more likely to "win" by virtue of coolness in a story without "vs." in the title.

I don't actually come across too many of the poorly written Superman stories, but maybe it's because I view them with a certain perspective where the character still warms my heart. In my eyes, stories about him should predominantly be about internal conflicts, especially when the hero has to question his identity. He's a powerful personification of a lot of ideals, and I like it when he proves that they're still valid. Meanwhile, from everything I've heard (with the exception of "Soulja Boy"), he is also a powerful musical inspiration. He's an archetype, an unchanging ideal, a vessel through which deep thoughts can be communicated, perfect for the lyricist and composer. His stories might not be consistent, but his music is.

Meanwhile, he's the hero I wish I could be, the one who inspires me the most, which is probably the most important quality of superhero books. Which reminds me, George Bailey is also a wonderful character. And Atticus Finch. And Jean Valjean. Thank you Capra, Harper, and Hugo.
