SciO: Regional Results

Nara

This past Saturday was our regional. Nearly everyone on the team, Varsity and JV, placed high in their events.

However, history has a sad sense of humor. Last year, our team lost state by four points.

This year, it was seven we lost by. We would have made it, too, but our Thermo box got 10 points deducted for some reason that I don't fully understand.

Oh well! Better start studying for next year. =)

The list for next year's events is already out, and it usually doesn't change that much. So, assuming the list is "final," I'll be doing entomology, MagLev, Experimental, hopefully Write it Do it, and I want to try Mission Possible. I heard that it was probably the worst event ever, but it sounds fun. =P

Really hoping for Sounds of Music to come back in two years. As seniors, we would destroy the competition. =P

Mission Possible is the best event ever. On a couple of occasions our entry required someone to be on standby with a fire extinguisher to make sure things didn't get out of hand. Definitely go for it.

That sounds amazing. =P Alright, I'll go for it.

To think that an event needs a fire extinguisher on standby... That is my goal now.

I'll give you a hint: get some igniters from model rocket engines. When you complete a circuit and pass like 6 V through them, they go off, and if they're in contact with paper, it'll catch on fire. That paper could be holding a ball that then drops.

So you have like kinetic -> electrical -> FIRE -> potential -> kinetic. Or something like that. It's been a while.

Sixy you're awesome. SciO technically doesn't start up again until next school year, and now I'm way too excited to wait to try this.

A good way to start is to go pull up the rules and build yourself an enclosure. I know there's a maximum size it can be, something like 2 ft x 3 ft x 1 ft, so probably want something that big. A box with five sides is usually the best way, then you can either lay it down (2' wide x 3' deep x 1' tall) or stand it up (2' wide x 1' deep x 3' tall). We usually stood ours up - it gives you a lot more opportunities to use potential energy. We also usually slacked off and build it out of cardboard, but if you have time you can make something nice and sturdy out of wood or fiberboard.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. It's been a while since I was able to compete, but I did do it for seven years.

The official rules for 2014 aren't up yet, but the concept should be about the same. I'll start formulating ideas now and change them to fit the official rules when they're released. I really like that fire chain.. This event will be so much fun.

I'll definitely take up that offer, though I'll probably start PMing a lot during October/November, when the season starts. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!
