The Meme of Doctor Who Series 8

Seriously if Heaven/The Afterlife/The Promised Land turns into a Red Star thing I will flip my lid.

Otherwise I haven't been this engaged in the show since just before the end of Series 5.

I'd assume that "Heaven" will turn out to be something more than just a Red Star-like apparatus. Moffat might be a flawed writer, but he's not as bad as Greg was in the later years.

It looks really interesting, I'm sure it'll be a satisfying payoff. The titles of the last episodes really intrigue me.

Someone on tumblr noticed that both of the episode so far had a thing about breathing so that might be a running thing for the series too.

My own running gag I hope to continue this series is the Doctor inadvertently describing himself when describing the enemy. Half-faced man and Rusty fit this so far.

Also yeah thanks for the breathing thing, I forgot about that and thought it was interesting while watching it.

In Deep Breath there was holding your breath to fool the robots, and in Into the Dalek Clara was warned not to hold her breath during miniaturization or else she'll explode. "Don't be lasagna."

I wouldn't be surprised if the breathing thing was just a coincidence but it'd be one of the most sly arcs they've ever done if it turns out to be A Thing.

Logical conclusion: everything in this series is a running gag.

hi sorry to be a stickler for terminology, but 'running gag' is for jokes only

the breath thing was kinda serious in Deep Breath (although slightly less so in Into The Dalek, so i think it could only be described as a recurring theme, although i guess the enemy description thing kinda counts?? (idk if referring to them simply as running gags was a joke in itself, but yeah, i just dislike mislabelling >.>)

but yeah, proper responses:

i'm gonna be honest, i have no faith in moffat payoff-wise after the last couple of years of reset buttons and rushed explanations. *shrug*

personally, i'm not particularly intrigued by this character -- so far she hasn't shown herself to be anything more than the moffatian archetype of the mysterious woman primarily characterised by a romantic obsession with the doctor

I wouldn't be surprised if the breathing thing was just a coincidence but it'd be one of the most sly arcs they've ever done if it turns out to be A Thing.

i'm inclined to just think it's coincidence, given that apart from maybe bad wolf the arc words have never been anywhere near this subtle, but it'd be pretty awesome if it were true and they keep up the subtlety

But is it a running gag if someone (i.e. me) finds it funny? I don't really make the distinction most of the time because something repeated all the time borders on the ridiculous already. [for instance, spoilering every comment here when most comments don't really say anything spoilery]. Extremely thin line between running gag and recurring theme in my book.
