sometimes it feels odd...

a goose

...preferring not to use capitalisation in my posts here unless it's, like, srs talk, i dunno

like, everyone else has all the grammar things and that's pretty cool, but sometimes i can't help but wonder if the fact that the rest of this site doesn't adopt quite as conversational a tone means that every now and then people look at the stuff i write and are like 'god that guy looks silly, not doing the grammar thing'

is that a thing? am i, like, unintentionally breaking an unspoken law of bzp?

...am i breaking a spoken law of bzp? is that a rule somewhere? it's been ages since i read those tbh

but yeah, more importantly, i kinda wonder if that's something that comes across as unusual compared to errybody else, and the way in which it comes across as unusual if so

opinions?

I don't personally think there's any problem with doing that myself. A lack of capitalization and punctuation affects the way people read your posts, but not in a bad way. It makes the sentences sound more laid-back and conversational — exactly the opposite of how ALL CAPS MAKES YOU SOUND ANGRY AND SERIOUS TO THE POINT OF RIDICULOUSNESS.

In a more formal or professional context like a news article it would seem out-of-place, but nothing wrong with adopting a "voice" of your choosing in a post or blog entry.

Usually, I only use all lowercase or avoid punctuation if I'm making a sarcastic or otherwise "playful" post, to emphasize that the post isn't as serious as my usual posts.

yeah i get that

i'm kinda that last point taken to an extreme, where only the most serious stuff gets proper punctuation and the rest is lowercase by default as a result of not being as serious because i'd like to think of myself as a pretty laid-back person just in general

there's a fair number of us who use Casual Typing here on bzp. there does seem to be some sort of unspoken rule against it though doesnt there? at least a general attitude that "proper" grammar makes you Mature and Serious (i still punctuate more on bzpower than i do elsewhere), which makes sense on a site that's ostensibly for kids. personally, though, i find that "proper" grammar often comes off as intimidating.

i completely agree

despite there being a number of us we do appear to be a minority, which seems odd because it's a big thing on other sites, and i know what you mean about proper grammar seeming intimidating

and yeah i think that there's a connection between this being a 'kids' site which doesn't seem entirely comfortable with that reputation (and hey i think it's an awesome thing that we're able to talk about serious stuff here rather than letting what we used to be hold us back, it's awesome guys) and the presentation of typing on it, and i won't judge other people for typing properly because y'know it's all choice

tbh i used to be a grammar nut but i've calmed down a lot since then and i like the fact that the way i type reflects that, although my punctuation here is probably about the equivalent to what it is elsewhere (although i cut down on my use of abbreviations and swearing, the latter for obvious reasons)

yeah, it's nice that people are actually taking me seriously here even when i type like this, and it's cool to see more varied typing styles around here

and i was the same way for a long time, like even during the early stages of my decline in "proper" grammar i was still a grammar freak which is, tbh, really hypocritical. fortunately ive calmed down on that since then, heh

Usually I use proper grammar, but if I'm making a joke or just venting about life (especially on Tumblr), that goes out the window.

yeah, i like having variation present in written voices. it makes everyone that little bit more unique and distinguishable and i think that's cool

ouch
i'm glad you've calmed down, tho c:

EDIT because i have to reply to ALL THE RESPONSES and one wasn't there yet when i started typing:

tbh i'm not entirely sure how i feel about tumblr overall but one of the things that i do really like about it is how much lowercase, casual typing there is, it feels v. relaxed

I tend to fluctuate randomly between grammar and not grammar. It depends on what I want to say, I guess.

i can feel that

i mostly talk without capitalization, but i always punctuate and everything.

i'm just too lazy to hit the ''shift'' key 9/10 times unless i'm being serious.

Or decide to randomly type with caps. That also happens. Like it did right now.

i have to admit i don't go there because i am really big into consistency

like, if i'm typing a phone post or an ipad post i will go to great lengths to ensure that nothing is capitalised so that my brand remains untarnished until we move into Real Talk (or i capitalise things for comedic/attention-drawing purposes)

but i get what you're saying
