Pokemon ORAS Demo: My Initial Thoughts

TNTOS

As some of you may know, Nintendo is distributing codes for the demo for the upcoming remakes of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, called Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which are coming out almost exactly one month from today.

In the US, you can get these codes by signing up for their Pokémon Trainer Club Newsletter. When you get the newsletter in your email, you take the code and put it in the Nintendo eShop to download the demo onto your Nintendo 3DS system.

Since I thought Ruby and Sapphire were fabulous games and I have been eagerly looking forward to the remakes ever since they were officially announced, I signed up for the newsletter and last night received the demo code in my inbox and proceeded to download the game onto my 3DS.

Here are some of my quick thoughts on the demo:

-Brendan is for some reason called Orlando. I liked Brendan better, as Orlando makes me think of Orlando Bloom. I'm probably just used to Brendan's old name, though it doesn't matte either way because when I get the full game I am going to use my own name, as I usually do with Pokémon games

-I would have liked to have received Mega Steelix rather than Mega Glalie, mostly because I like Steelix better than Glalie

-Loved Matt and Tabitha's interactions. Matt is especially funny, mostly because he seems like he's there to have a good time

-Mega Swampert and Mega Sceptile as pretty cool from what I've done with them. Won't say anything about Mega Blaziken, as Mega Blaziken has been around for a while and I'm pretty sure everyone already knows about it

-I like the 3D Mossdeep City. It looks like Mossdeep, but in 3D. If this is an example of what the other towns and cities are gonna look like in 3D, then I can safely say that they are going to look great

That's all for now. There's still some more things to do, I think, so I might update this post later with more thoughts if I remember or feel like it.

The names are just for the demo I think, 'cause Alpha and Omega/Anna and Orlando.

I'm in the same boat on Steelix, yo.

All the banter really was quite fun ^^ It's a swell first look at the game! :D

I wish that there had've been a chance to choose which you wanted to play as, since May/Anna is sorely under-represented in the promtional stuff, but... Still a pretty cool demo. =P

What do you think about the removal of roller skates?  Personally I'm glad to see them go--they were too hard to control, and it's nice to be able to use the Circle Pad without fear now.

Oh man they removed rollerskates? Thank GOD I hated those

I signed up for the Trainer club and everything before the deadline but didn't receive an email, so whatever ;__;

The roller skates being gone is okay by me, although whether I end up missing them later will probably depend partly on how well the bikes control. The bike in X and Y handled beautifully, but they couldn't possibly have the Acro Bike and Mach Bike have such freeform movement, could they?

"Orlando" not only starts with "O" but also contains "land", which makes me wish "Anna" had instead been a name with more oceanic connotations. Maybe you could consider Brendan/May to be the names of the rival characters and Orlando/Anna to be the names for the player characters? I always use my own name for my character too, but I actually like some of the demo characters' names more than their final names (like Calem and Serena, who in early X and Y screenshots and demos apparently went by the much cooler Xavier and Yvonne).

There will be more distributions at a later date!  The only link with the details I know is a site that has forums, so I can't source it, but if you're still interested it is there to look into.

Forums are ok now, provided they're sfw. The dark ages of BZP have been over for a bit now :>

Even so, I still don't like Orlando as much as Brendan (Anna's not bad, but I still think of her as May).

Like I said, though, it's probably more out of nostalgia than anything.

It doesn't bother me one way or the other, but I did expect to be able to choose who I wanted to play as.

I hated the rollerskates. I only used them when I had to. The rest of the time, I either ran or used the bike. I will not miss them in the slightest.
