NPC: "You have to hurry, the fate of the world depends on your being on time!"

Hero: "Alright!"

*does several irrelevant sidequests*

*polishes chainmail*

*buys a new helmet*

*buys some healing potions*

*checks every corner of the dungeon, explores every dead end*

*opens all treasure chests on the way*

*goes back to make sure they didn't miss out on anything*

*eventually gets to where they ought to have gone*

*enemy apparently waited for several hours to commence*

*finally saves the day*

NPC: "Thank you, you were just on time! C:"

It's kind of hilarious when the world is "ON THE VERGE OF ENDING" for several weeks/months/years depending on how long you take. Apparently, the world's existence is connected to the player's life. It only ends when you die!

And then you save the world, and wait until the world is on the verge of ending. Again.

Yep, I love that logic too. In Pokemon White 2, as I'm going through the Plasma Frigate, it's like "Okay guys, I'm going to leave to tend to my avenue of shops. Don't let Ghetsis take over the world while I'm gone!"

Though hardly a stringent time-limit, in the classic RPG Ultima V: Warrriors of Destiny, the character that you must save to win the game will die after several in-game years.

Ultima VII Part I: the Black Gate (also a brilliant game,) on the other hand, has a particularly egregious example of RPG-logic, in that several characters, if the hero has reached a certain stage, will speak of how the Guardian (the main villain) will be coming through the titular moongate in a few hours, even though the player can wait as long as he wants. In fact, it is possible to reach the Black Gate, hear the Guardian say "I will come through the Black Gate now, stop the Avatar!" leave, and then return whenever you like to prevent him arriving. :P
