What I'm Thankful For

Today is not Thanksgiving. Sunday wasn't Thanksgiving, either, but that's when my family decided to celebrate it. Which means that this entry has the awkward distinction of being both too late and too early, but I digress. We celebrated it then because my father and I will be out of the country during a ten day period and won't be returning until a few days after. But we love our Thanksgiving and skipping it was not an option. So, as per custom, here's a list of the things I am thankful for:

My family. We are not a perfect family. We very often get on each other's nerves and we can be quite hostile toward each other at times, but at the end of the day those negative feelings are very easily thrown aside. My parents are incredibly supportive of myself and my two sisters, not to mention each other. My Dad is always there to be the fixer of electronics big and small, and even if he screws up... well, it's the thought that counts. I think. My Mom is there to help me learn how to cook and to ensure that I always pay attention to the fine details, because when I don't bad things tend to happen. As much as I appreciate those, though, they are fairly superficial. What it comes down to is that they are supportive, wise, and always willing to help me out any way they can. They may drive me crazy sometimes, but I'm lucky to have them and I will never forget that.

I've blogged about my sisters before and devoted a whole entry to them, but it's worth repeating how much I love having them in my life. They're polar opposites which can make for frequent tension (probably close to 80% of the aforementioned hostility), but that also means they reflect two completely different perspectives for me to look at. One shows me the value of embracing adventure and acting free spirited, while the other is a shining example of dedication and reliability. I think they're both worthy of emulation, and if I end up half as decent as either of them I think I'll be okay. The former tends to be easier for me to talk to (she's just more outgoing and actually willing to talk about things) but they both provide me with lots of life advice and that's definitely appreciated.

My old friends. Admittedly I haven't talked to them in a very long time, and when I do try my emails tend to go ignored. But if I said they weren't influential to me I'd be lying. I've been inspired by seeing the things they've accomplished, and I truly believe that they're helping me strive to live up to my potential. They just don't know it.

My new friends. Working a job is so much better when you have coworkers you enjoy spending time with. When I first came in they were very friendly towards me and instantly made me feel like an equal. We've gone on get togethers and outings a few times and it works wonders for building a positive environment in the workplace. Some of them have left since I started, and despite having barely known them it stung when they did. I'm glad I got to know them a bit even if it was only for a short time.

My jobs. I do not have glamorous jobs and they do not pay well... but they are jobs and keep me working which is more than some people can say. I don't love them but I'm not taking them for granted either. And I'm starting my applications for graduate school so there's that.

So there's my Thanksgiving entry for the year. If I had other Thanksgiving entries in here they would probably read the same, and future entries will probably still be the same. I just really love my family and friends.

This is why I like Thanksgiving. It's just about being together with important people and being thankful. No gifts, no tedious decorations, just those annoying shopping commercials to market the next holiday which I've already finished shopping for in August/October, so it's totally irrelevant anyway. Plus, you know, great food.
