Yep. I've used Bonkles/Bonkels, Barnacles, Bonkers and the like often as a goofy term for Bionicles.

Yeah, I hear it a lot.

Oh, yah.

I'm legitimately surprised there are people here who haven't heard the term.

I don't really like it.

"bonkles" was a term coined by BZP member Dokuma (not sure on the specifics of that) and then a few years back, some friends and I started using it on a LEGO blog we run.

 

after we started using it, the people who read the blog started using it too, and it just sort of spread rapidly from there?

 

that's the history of the term as I understand it, anyway.

I have mainly seen it used around BZP, so that makes sense. The folks on Flickr seem to use barnacles a lot more.

I've been saying bonkles for a few years now

People seem to consider it a good substitute for humour. I'm not sure I see why.

Always thought it was named after some small town in the Philippines. Never found it funny in the slightest.
