Essential Hardware for Living on One's own Independent of Parental Units

Or because I was feeling like making a bombastically awesome blog entry for no reason.

1. Refrigerator - This is where you put lots of other vitally important things like Sprite, orange juice, cheese, sandwiches, other sources of protein, possible fruits and vegetables (optional), and takeout.

2. Car - This is how you get your obligatory Sprite, orange juice, cheese, sandwiches, other sources of protein, possible fruits and vegetables (optional) and takeout from the grocery store to your house.

Also good for hauling books, Lego Bricks, irritating people, and anything else you need to get from Point A to Point B.

The neglect of these two vitally important items will cause you much misery and pain.

3. Three Desks - Desk #1: This is the computer desk. This is where your computer is. To-do list must be visible from this desk. Poster yelling at you to stay on task and not check BZPower for the 400th time is, unfortunately, optional.

Desk #2: This is the writing desk, i.e. the math homework/paperwork desk. Stuff still has to be done by hand.

Desk #3: This is the Lego construction/modeling desk. Better be big enough to stretch out that concept model and contain the biggest WIP imaginable, and its second cousin.

4. Three Rooms, a Bathroom, a Roof, and a Door - Room #1 is that kitchen space. And where your TV is. And whatever you sit on when watching the TV. Preferably there's some carpet in there somewhere.

Room # 2 is where the three desks hang out. This is so when your computer has 124 Windows Updates at 2. A.M., you can walk into Room #3 and sleep without the monitor glaring IN YOUR FACE.

5. Clothes, Bed, and access to washing machines - This is so when other people come over to your place, your place is ready for them. It's for keeping up appearances. It's not optional, though.

*Sigh*

It is a pain when all of these desks are the same desk and it's clearly too small for any of those purposes.

Can't you just... turn it off? I could understand about the noise levels as that can make it hard to sleep but the computer can keep running without a monitor.

I basically have #1, use a clipboard for #2, and use my floor for #3.

Doesn't work for my laptop. If the computer is in its shutdown sequence, I'm basically left waiting for the monitor to turn off automatically.

Why don't you just close the lid of your laptop?

This. Or alter your computer's settings to have the monitor automatically turn off sooner. And before you say that something is preventing you from closing the lid of your laptop, or that you have no such settings: then just throw a towel on top of your laptop. Or turn it away from your bed. Physically cover it up or something.

Finally flew from the nest, fishers? :P

I've found that the three desks can be consolidated into a single unit of appreciable size, made easier by keeping things tidy. I have yet to learn how to do the latter consistently, though.

Furthermore, a car can be rendered unnecessary by living within a few blocks of campus and grocery stores, and by living in a city with a decent transit system.

Having a taste for the finer things in life, I would add an espresso machine and a decanter containing a quality libation to this list, but these things are entirely extraneous and frivolous to most people.

Oh, and a bottle of genuine Canadian maple syrup, to go with one's morning waffles and latte. Obviously.

Because that throws the computer into standby mode and pauses the update installation.

I suppose I could change that, but it's not a big enough of a deal for me to bother.

I wish.

You need coffee, alcohol, and syrup. I need the desks. It's a me thing. :P

I tried car-free living - even with a good transit system, hauling groceries home without one is a pain. Someone I know gets by with a bike trailer, but I'd rather not spend most of my life pedaling, but rather at my three desks working. :P

I'm told a rice maker is a marvelous nutritional device, conducive to highly-increased efficiency in university students living on their own
