Terton Might of Just Won the World...



If you think about it, a panel has 4 walls around it, then the background could also be a wall. So maybe the fourth wall is the one opposite to the background wall, therefore it is always broken as it is what allows us to see through into their world.

That's not really extraordinary... That's where the term "fourth wall" basically comes from (though it originally referred to theatre rather than comics). The idea is that only the characters can see the fourth wall, but sometimes a character will speak directly to the audience or reference something only the audience (people outside the fourth wall) should know about). That's what it means to break the fourth wall.
