The Broken Joints Graveyard

Nescent

Spent half an hour fishing broken joints from my Bionicle drawers, took some photos.

Here is the whole pile of broken joints. May they rest in pieces.

Most of them just had small, unexciting cracks, so I picked out all the horribly disfigured parts and took some glamour shots.

The obligatory 2007 lime green comparison. I was actually surprised to have so many still in tact, but I've probably never MOCed with those pieces since they're so fragile.

To be honest though, I think this is the most fragile piece in all of Bionicle:

I could only find one that didn't have any cracks.

The dark red 2008 hands also put up a weak fight:

This was probably the most interesting ruined joint.

Anyway, it's nice to have those cleaned out, although I'm sure there are still some left for me to find. Observation: Aside from the 2007 lime greens, there was only one - one, amongst hundreds - cracked 2001-style hand piece. It was a dark blue piece from Gadunkadunk. I really wish they never replaced that mold.

I've actually had joints just fracture slightly, and still retain enough clutch in the fractured area to still be usable on MOCs. It's nice when things aren't rendered instantly unusable by damage.

Conversely, I also had a yellow arm piece from Mata Nui break on all four sides of its cups, in the most extensive damage to one piece I've seen.

I must one of those lucky few who never had a single joint crack ever. That's quite a collection you've got there.

No...broken...joints? I was unfortunate enough to get into Bionicle towards the end of 2006, when sockets were becoming breakable. At least most of the above pieces got a lot of use before snapping.

Yeah most of the ones I found were like that, with one or two small cracks weakening the connection. I just singled out the most mangled ones for those photos.

I remember those being really fragile. Two-sided yellow joints in general break a lot, I had broken joints on Hewkii Inika, Hewkii Mahri, Toa Ignika, Mata Nui...nothing as bad as all four sides though, not even sure how that would happen!

I never had any sockets break on me... before 2007. Since then, I've worn through a few of my older ones, but now I just buy a ton of replacements so it's not quite as heartbreaking anymore. I've stored a small collection of broken joints, but not quite as many as you've got there. Wow.

Lime joints and 2008-2010 joints aside, I always found that the Bohrok feet were a bit more prone to breaking than other pieces with the old-style sockets. I think even one from the Cendox broke... Which I found odd. Maybe I'm just unlucky with those.

I've had some broken Bohrok feet too, that's the only socket I can remember breaking pre-2006. They're definitely one of the more fragile old-school parts, but still a lot more reliable than the newer socket molds.

CCBS is great though, still not a single cracked joint from G2, and I've MOCed with them a lot already.

I had a fair amount of bad luck with the 7M double ball cup from the time it was introduced in 2005. I can't help but wonder if the removal of the holes in the sides of the Technic axle housings was a part of why that part (and all of the 2008 redesigns) were so fragile. Could be that they allowed the plastic to expand or contract more easily when parts were attached or detached.

Bohrok feet gave me some trouble too. I don't know when I first encountered one breaking but I know I had issues with them at least as early as 2005.

I should probably buy a big bag of sockets, but I don't really have a problem with broken parts any more. Must have mishandled them when I MOCed as a kid.

I thought the same thing, since the longer double ball cup pieces lacked those holes and broke a lot. The indentations they added to sockets in 2008 didn't help at all. I'm really thankful that Bionicle took a five-year hiatus during which the quality of ball joints improved.

The only new sockets that worry me are the friction extenders. So far all of mine have held up, but they do seem like they're under too much stress.

I thought the friction extenders were made of rubber or other softer stuff. Not sure why that would break. Maybe stretch out, but not break.

Good to know; I thought they were hard plastic.

Hey I have a question with joint pieces, basically I've purchased/recreated from bulk used sets of 8577 Pahrak-Kal, 8589 Lerahk and 8570 Gali Nuva. On one of Pahrak-Kal's limbs wobbles a bit same as Lerahk's arms and one of his knees. For Gali Nuva, all of her limbs has the same problem. This causes a problem for posing and for the swinging feature. Can someone tell me how to fix them so they can move a little better?
