Tangled on TV

So if you don't know, Disney is making an animated TV series based on Tangled, set between the original movie and the short Tangled Ever After. It's got a good voice cast (both Mandy Moore and Zachery Levi are back), and the art style looks really nice. But if you've seen the movie, you might notice something... off about this picture.

Why does Rapunzel have hair? Who at Disney approved the show but said, "You know what? Just ignore the ending, it's not important and we need to sell more brushable dolls". Rapunzel losing her hair was the crux of the ending, and if they don't have a good explanation for getting it back (and losing it again before Tangled Ever After), why even make the show in the first place? You might as well just make a Frozen series. It'd be like if at the beginning of Shrek 2, Fiona was human again and nobody mention.

The show could still be good, but that is a big problem they have to get around first. Also I care way too much about children's media.

I'll preface this by saying I still haven't seen Tangled or Tangled Ever After. But, title-wise, Tangled wouldn't make a whole lot of sense without the hair connection. In fact, I'd honestly be a bit skeptical whether an entire cartoon series based on the movie could succeed without Rapunzel having her iconic locks. Really, the bigger question might be whether trying to create a TV series based on a movie that already neatly wrapped up its own plot threads (no pun intended) is really the best idea.

That said, they'll probably have some explanation. It's just a question of whether they can make that explanation satisfactory.

tbh this makes me think of the aladdin and the little mermaid tv series that disney made back in the day, which weren't half-bad as i remember them from my childhood and faced some similar issues in terms of resolved plot threads. i'm presuming that they're going for something similar here?

Yeah, I like the characters, but the show still seems pretty pointless. I touched upon this, but Frozen still seems like the better idea for a show. It has plenty of good characters, and the main hook of the movie still existed at the end. Also it's much more popular than Tangled ever was (I personally like Tangled more and recommend seeing it if you like Disney movies, but the point still stands)

The show I remember the most is the Lilo and Stitch one, and it did revert some of the characters (Stitch stopped speaking full sentences, for one). But I doubt any of these shows reverted anything that the originals said was permanent. And yeah, having the voice actors back is a huge plus.

I am currently optimistic that the promotional art here will be just that, and the character will have her short brown hair in the movie. If it's not... well, at least it will have new music from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater! And it will be in 2D so that should be fun!

But yeah. While the premise of the show is encouraging, contrived reasons to get her hair long again do not sound entertaining.
