So the new graphic novel lets us see the G2 Mask of Time! Awesome!

It then says "This mask was once called the Vahi and it was split in two pieces."

This is the rage part.

Okay, so. You're saying that the G1 Vahi and the G2 Mask of Time were originally part of one Mask of Time that was then split in two.

But...the G1 Vahi was created by Vakama combining the Great Disks together.

That gif's not just there to show Vakama's process, it's also there to illustrate how attempting to combine those statements just doesn't work.

I mean I know plenty of stuff in G2 doesn't necessarily mesh, but this is super contradictory and it bothers me. A lot.

I haven't seen much rage (thankfully)... and the Vahi reveal seemingly doesn't have anything to do with the G1 storyline OR the Vahi from that continuity. All we know is that the mask was called the Vahi, predates Okoto and the stars, and split into two parts... the only new information there is the name, age, and the appearance of the upper half. Evidence for a continuation this ain't, unless there's something else suggesting that in the graphic novel that hasn't yet been shared. So don't get your knickers in a twist over any supposed retcon.

My favorite theory I've seen since this reveal is that the Mask of Time IS the Mask of Ultimate Power, and that when Ekimu knocked it off of Makuta it shattered, with half of it cast back in time to prehistory and the other half cast (presumably) into the future. It'd make for an amazingly clever twist that'd neatly explain the upper mask's apparent age AND the continued absence of both the other half of the Mask of Time and the Mask of Ultimate Power in the current storyline. And the upper Mask of Time DOES have a spiky appearance similar to the MoUP's silhouette...

I honestly really like that theory.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but saying this mask's lower half is missing and it was called the Vahi and the G1 Vahi is known for looking like a half-mask, retcon is the first thing that springs to mind for me.  I guess Lego could be doing that intentionally as a Red Herring, though.

Gosh, I hope so.

It's not saying the lower half was called the Vahi, though. It's saying the WHOLE mask was called the Vahi. And either way, a shared name is just a shared name... certainly a bit curious, when none of the other masks have been named so far, but no more or less meaningful than the shared names of the Toa or Makuta.

I mean, you yourself pointed out the contradiction inherent in assuming that the other half of the Vahi is the one from G1. Something's got to give either way, and it'd make more sense to discard that continuation theory than it would be to discard significant events of the G1 canon.
