"Masked Feelings" Poem

Soran

I felt depressed so I wrote a poem. None of it is actually related to anything going on with me, it just flowed well.

Masked Feelings

By Soran

"A smile is all I need," he said

While beaming right at me.

I forced myself, nodding my head.

"That's what I like to see!"

I slowly found my way right past,

And sauntered all the way.

I thought of things that did not last,

The things that didn't stay.

I dreamt of love, I dreamt of life,

The goals of human kind.

Of laughs, love and evening strife,

The things that weren't mine.

I wandered through my mind's sad haze,

The broken dreams of you.

While lost in thoughts and in a daze

I thought of what was true.

Life is no test it's simply cruel,

There is no fairness here.

"And without me you're just a fool,"

Were tunes upon my ear.

I settled down, slowly returned,

Into this world of ours.

The world I left; what wasn't earned,

I counted down the hours.

"My time is long, but could be short,"

I looked upon the date.

The final day to end this sport,

The day I took my fate.

Optional "Happy Ending" Stanza
And so I am, free of my chains,

I try my best to boast.

Now simply free, without my pains,

I'm just a spooky ghost.

Well. Definitely dark, although it's still pretty good despite the stanza

Also I can't think of anything else but a super 2spooky Soran ghost in a lei with a tropical hat

:kaukau: I relate to this.  While I'm not suicidal, I do feel that life can be aimless and pointless at times.  It's like whenever something good comes about, it was never meant to last, and that the present always consists of bittersweet memories.  I also relate to the forced smiles when people are watching.

My kneejerk reaction is to interpret this "other person" as a romantic interest.  Personally, I try to avoid interpreting it that way, because I try very hard to not care about those things, although I have been depressed in the past for a lack of romance in my past.  Because I'm so protective of myself in this area, I relate more when I interpret your poem as being about a person who has drifted apart from his friends and now has nobody in his life.  That's a pain that I haven't built up a defense for, and I'm a weaker man now for it.

Thanks.

I mean, if he can wear a Ghost of Christmas Present outfit I'm sure he can wear one of those.

I definitely wrote it with the intention of having it be relatable to some degree.

I'll admit when I was writing the poem, the intention was to have the "other person" that was referenced by the poet's romantic interest but I left it purposefully vague as I was writing the poem so that it could be relatable to most other situations. So the main character's gender isn't revealed, neither is the "other person's". Aside from mentions of love being a desire in one's life there isn't any actual romantic elements included in the poem. It simply seems like the separation of two people resulted in depression and eventual suicide. So you're spot on with your interpretation of it as it really relates to what the core concept of the poem is about; the loss of someone(s) of importance and having nothing in one's life to live for.
