THE POTENTIAL IS MAXIMUM

So, Dragon Ball Super. They’re about to head into a new arc where 10 fighters from each of the 12 universes are brought together for a massive tournament, and the losers’ universes will be destroyed. I’ve been unsure what to think of this since the beginning: multiversal tournament sounds great, but the survival aspect…I mean I guess it adds stakes, but I love that we found out there are 12 universes, it opened up so much potential and if they’re going to throw all that away…

*sigh*

I guess we’ll have to see. Anyway, a new trailer for the arc was released today, giving brief glimpse of the gods of destruction and angels of some of the universes. Several of them have animal motifs like Beerus, though others are more humanoid, one is a clown…for some reason. There are also clips of some other fighters, including ol’ Cabba and Frost, and someone who…

Uh…well, it’s early, but we see what appears to be a female character quickly transforming into a female Broly.

I don’t think anyone was expecting this, but let’s think for a second. Broly is, well, “legendary” for being so powerful. If we’re getting a female version of that character, then that means we might actually be getting a female Super character…who can hold her own against relevant opponents?!

We’ve already seen that Android 18 is going to be involved in this arc (finally getting back in the action after a long wait), so that could be cool, and Vados and any other female angels (or goddesses of destruction?) are definitely sitting at a high power level, but this feels a little different. Probably because:

-CANON FEMALE SUPER SAIYAN

-Being a Super Saiyan phenomenally increases one’s chances of being/staying relevant

-Saiyan, so definitely going to be actually doing some fighting

-A female Broly. That’s, like…something new!

I mean we’ll have to wait and see how exactly this plays out, but…I’m extremely interested in seeing how it does.

Wait a second... I thought dragon ball super was just a retelling or even just updated re-release of the original dragon ball z series? Like an "HD" collection.

*Nods* I'll be completely honest, the last dragonball arch I really followed was the majin buu arc... though good to know DB is making a comeback... Hopefully it's better than GT

Yeah, Super starts a little while after the Buu Saga, though the first two arcs were retellings of the two recent movies (Battle of Gods and Resurrection F) so that’s probably where the confusion comes from.  They’ve done two whole arcs of brand new material since then and are currently on a cooldown period as the next arc gets set up, and like the title said, this arc’s shaping up to have a lot of potential!

If you want my personal opinion, I prefer Super to GT, though admittedly I wasn’t paying as much attention to GT when I watched it.  Super definitely has its faults, but it does have some really nice high points (great comedy, more interesting new characters (and we’re actually starting to get bite-sized chunks of development for some of the older characters!), Super Saiyan Blue looks so much better than Super Saiyan 4).  I do hope they find a way to adapt/rework the Shadow Dragons from GT though, I’ve always adored that concept as the greatest thing to come out of GT by far.

All of Super is up on Crunchyroll with English subtitles for free if you’re interested, and it’s updated every week as they air in Japan.  Plus the English dub just started airing on Cartoon Network—3 episodes in now, so the Battle of Gods adaptation is just taking off.

So wait... Super takes place after Z, but before GT? That's weird.

Also honestly thought Crunchyroll was a pay to view only service, though if they are up for free with subtitles. I may just take a look. Especially since I don't have cable television, and have not had cable television for the last... about 3 years. Since I moved basically.

General consensus is that Super has rendered GT non-canon, or at the very least they are alternate canons.  It's not impossible that GT could still happen, but then there'd need to be a ton of explanations, and it's just not really worth the trouble.

Some of Crunchyroll is premium, yeah, but they also have stuff for free.  Not sure how much though, Super's all I'm watching there at the moment.
