God Of The Flowing Hair

I love Apollo. Or at least the one translation I read that rendered the part where he appears to Ascanius as "Apollo, God of the Flowing Hair", which is an absolutely wonderful description. In fact I like most of the gods and goddesses who show up throughout the Aeneid. They give entertaining speeches and are all dramatic (or at least Venus and Juno are toward each other) or wise and just and awesome.

And yes, the Latin AP is tomorrow. Should be fun. Some things to remember from the Aeneid, none of which are likely to actually be on the exam:

  • Apollo, God of the Flowing Hair
  • when Juno relinquishes her cloud
  • Venus and her purple boots
  • Minerva impaling Ajax on a pointy cliff
  • Cleopatra striking her tambourine in the Battle of Actium
  • Dido declaring she will haunt Aeneas after her death (okay, that might actually be used)
  • Venus and the frock of desire
  • Turnus declaring that the gods scare him (that might be there too)
I hope one of the sight-reading passages is from Martial. He's always hilarious. We read an old one from him today in class that basically went "O Hippodame, I love you, but your name is too ugly. You'll have to change it to something more pleasing to the Muses." Yee.

Now, off to go skim some of the English sections and read through the little of Book 12 I have left to review.

My book gave one translation of Minerva's impalement of Ajax the Younger on a cliff was that she "firmly affixed" him. Which is rather humorous if you consider what actually happened.

See, I'm taking AP Poetry, so I get Ovid and Catullus. Of course, I'm not taking the test for it, even though I probably should have paid for it and gone through with it...
