Sad Mouth, Sad Mouth...

Turakii #1 Lavasurfer

So, I got the expander in yesterday. Ready for a pronoun-confusing explanation?

The expander is this metal, square thing which is up at the roof of my mouth. It's prevented from falling out by four metal... poles?... that are attached to metal rings on four of my back teeth.

In case you've always wondered what an expander feels like, try putting a finger in the top of your mouth and walking around like that. Then say hello to someone. And then maybe try to eat a cookie.

The expander is very similiar to that, except you don't look quite so goofy and your hand feels no pain when you eat.

Eating is quite interesting, especially when you want to suck on something (such as a cookie). When you do that, normally, you're mostly crushing the food between your tongue and the roof of your mouth. However, that turns out far different when you have a metal thing that's not quite flush against the top of your mouth. Trying to suck on something is a guaranteed way to jam as much food as possible into it. It's fun. :P

Also, the metal rings on my teeth, being dark-colored metal, make me look like a silver-toothed pirate at best (too bad the rings don't come in gold) and like I'm missing several teeth at worst, depending on the lighting. Only when I smile, though.

I don't especially feel like smiling, so I guess that won't be much of a problem. See, the metal rings have these small, sharp things on front (which I think are hooks), and they're meant for attaching the braces onto. However, since I have no braces, those nice, sharp metal things are happily injuring the insides of my cheeks. So smiling is very interesting. And lip-synching.

Ooh! Tightening! Can't forget that! So, every day, I lay on the couch with my mouth open while my dad sticks this thin wire into a hole in the metal square and then turns it. My teeth feel funny afterwards. Sort of like something's pushing on them. Which something is.

I'm still happy about having a fullmetal mouth, I just wish it weren't so painful...

I share your pain. Never liked the tightenings, they always made my mouth so sore. :(

My advice - do NOT get a Jolly Rancher stuck up underneath it. It's extremely annoying and takes forever to get rid of. xD

GAH! Joins the club, Turakii. Yeah, that's EVERYTHING I had to go through about a month or two ago. Oh, and Fullmetal Mouths FTW! But I misses the popcorn.... A WHOLE YEAR WITHOUT POPCORN. Torture! TORTURE! OH, and NEVER CHEW GUM. IT GETS STUCK UP IN THE EXPANDER- IT IS SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE AND TAKES FOREVER TO GET OUT!!

I had an expander many years ago. Not like the whole head thng like Niki, but yeah--NOT FUN. =(

Once you get it removed, you'll be amazed what the roof of your mouth feels like. It's like a whole new experience. 8D

Man am I glad I'm getting Invisalign! O___O

Hope the pain goes away though, I'd probably cry myself. I'm a real manly man. =)

Aw I'm sorry Turakii! I totally understand. D: I had to get those terrible expanders, then things between my teeth... then the braces... and now I have a retainer in my mouth that I wear at night. :/

Braces look cool, but the feeling is nowhere close. :P

This does wonders for me. I will have to endure this, too.

Don't worry, it's always worse than it sounds when described to you.

You have to experiance it yourself. :P

You actually get quite used to it....it's like a ritual. lol

Anyway, hope you're one to take the pain, Turakii! :D

Yeesh, my brother had one of those a few years ago. Did you bleed continuously like he did?

Good luck, though!

Gotta hate those braces-like thingies. I had them a year or two ago, and boy, do they suck!

Of course, they weren't expanders, so I have no idea what you're going through.

Well, you know what they say: Just grin and bear it!

You had a headgear, too? I had to have one of those for a couple years. Absolutely hated it.

...

And I can't even remember what it was for now. XD

Anyways, I know how you feel, Turakii... I don't think I had an expander quite like that, though I did have something similar, and it was awful.

I have to have something that sounds kind of like what you're describing in a few months. It's called a "Bite Jumper", and it pushes your lower jaw forward. Y'see, I have a -slightly- undergrown lower jaw... Meaning when I close my mouth, my lower and upper jaws aren't alligned right. And it looks kind of weird. I usually push my jaw forward so they are alligned, and pretty much what the Bite Jumper does is push it forward for me, only it can't come unalligned.

I think I made it sound like my jaw looks worse than it really is, though... It doesn't look as bad as you're probably imagining. =P

Well actually it's better that you think of it going to be this horrible thing, 'cause then it doesn't seem as bad when you get 'em. ;)

Well, The dentists fixed that for me. I just got seperator rubber bands and KARZ, they hurt.

Expander, eh? Wow, that must have been one of the few things I didn't have. I had the TPA, like, 4 times, two different types of headgear (one of them twice), spacers I lost count how many, partial braces, full mouth braces, chains I was wearing forever, my retainer still refuses to stay fused to my teeth, elastics twice, I needed two teeth pulled as part of the treatment, those nasty molds had to be done three or more times, and then there was the, I believe they called it a "nance" which was like a TPA except that it didn't cross the roof of my mouth, it came all the way across the front behind my upper incisors with a plastic piece that actually started digging it's way into my gums and couldn't be fixed for three days at which point it had actually cut through and was up against the back of my front teeth and when they took it out it removed a good part of my gums with it and I almost had to get stitches in my mouth, all of this which has been going on for the past 6(+?) years and...

Oh. Oh, we're talking about Turakii, aren't we? My bad. Anyways, Turakii, take it from somebody who knows exactly what you're feeling (except for the part where an expander is pretty much the only thing I didn't have). I know how it is with people saying "You'll be glad you did it when it's all over," and when you hear that you know that what they're saying is true. But if you're like me, some part of your subconscious seems to feel that about 25% of that comes out as "I'm partially just saying that to try and comfort you as a friend". But now that I'm pretty much done with the whole thing, I can say that with braces this "You'll be glad you did it when it's over," really does mean more than it sounds at the time. I couldn't imagine my life without having done it. Hang in there, Turakii. We're pulling for you. :lovesign:

Ooh, that sounds painful. Glad I missed that bit of the braces deal.

Just one more year... just one more year... (For me, that is; do I look like your orthodontist? :P )

Woah, I'm glad I never got that when I had braces! :happydance:

..... Wait a minute, that wasn't comforting at all. Er, scratch that, and let me say that I feel for you, Turakii... sort of.

YOU got a pallete expander too? Mine hurt a LOt for the first few days, but you get used to it. You'll get it off in six months

Your dad has to tighten the braces? My dentist always did it.

Never had an expander, I just have a retainer now. :D And never any headgear. I didn't know they still made those.

But you have automail teeth now! That's so cool!

...and painful.

Just be glad you don't have to go through the months and months of painful rehabilitation to relearn how to move your mouth. =P

Anyways, I feel guilty because I'm, like, the only one here with perfect teeth that have and will never require braces. =P
