Lego Job Conundrum

Spoony Bard

So I went for an interview today at the Lego store in Braintree.

If I am hired, I would be an instock employee, which is nothing wrong since I do that anyways. Here is the problem: It is a starting pay of $8.00 per hour and it is only part time. Management gets full time. So I would only be working a few days of the week.

Now I currently still work at Wal-Mart full time and make $8.80 per hour. However I do not have the option to transfer yet.

I want the job at Lego, but I'd be making a HUGE sacrifice if I was hired.

So what should I do? Keep the full time, $8.80/hour Wal-Mart job? Or leave it for a part time, $8.00/hour Lego job?

I say stay at Wal-Mart. It pays the same, but you have full-time hours. Thus, it pays more. The only difference in the jobs is that one has more LEGO aisles than the other.

$8.00 =/= $8.80

>_< the eight looked like a zero for some reason.

With Wal-Mart you also have the discount card, which can help a lot on (almost) everything.

Overall, it looks like Wal-Mart is better.

What will help you in the future, or maybe get you bumped up to a higher posistion? Personally I think working at a LEGO store would be the bomb, and maybe even help you out if your interested in further work for them.

Of course, getting paid more and having a fulltime job is pretty important, even if a LEGO job sounds cooler, it always comes down for what's going to end up being best for you.

I don't have any large stable job at the moment, so I can't really give the best advice cause of my ignorance. Just give it some time to think over and decide what's best and what you want to do. :)

Could you get another part-time job in addition to the Lego one and work there on your off-Lego days? What do you think the upward mobility at the Lego store would be; do you think you could rise out of part-time land quickly?

Hard to say. The extra 80 cents at Wal-Mart per hour can add up.

I say if you will get an Employee discount at the Lego Store, go for that. :P

Otherwise, stay at Wal-Mart.

Work at Wal-mart and save money from your pay until you have enough to live off of until you get a fulltime job, then switch to Lego and try to impress for a permanent job.

Yeah I can get another part time job. But the only way I can get full time is if I become part of management.

Screw the employee discount. It is only 10%, of which never makes a large difference anyways. :P

I could use that 10% discount at Legoland, but I am pretty sure I can get a better discount when working for Lego.

I don't save from Wal-Mart. I live off every paycheck.

And this is probably the only time I can get a job for Lego before they become settled with who they have and only hire for just holidays.

And for the last time, this is only a part time job. Nothing else. There is no full time sales associate or full time stocker.

Yeah I can get another part time job. But the only way I can get full time is if I become part of management.

I'd at least investigate some other places and see how difficult it'd be to set up a dual-job scenario then; it doesn't hurt to look at least. Conceivably, then, you could make total pay roughly equal to (or potentially exceeding) your current rate at Wal-Mart, though it would of course be with the added headache of having two jobs and two schedules. But last I heard, you weren't exceedingly pleased with your Wal-Mart job regardless, so it'd come down to which situation would be more irksome to you. I can say from experience that having a job where you are surrounded by what you like--illud est, LEGO Bricks in this case; music in my case--makes work a lot more enjoyable, though I haven't had two simultaneous jobs before (excluding freelance work), so I don't personally know how difficult that is. If you're lucky you could eventually get into a management position at the Lego store and discard the other job--but like I said, I don't know what the upward mobility is going to be like there, so who knows what the chances are.

Anyway, I'm probably not saying anything you haven't already considered. I wish you best of luck in making the decisions and with whatever results come out of it! Investigate all options and see if you can figure out what would work best for you and what would be least stressful and most enjoyable.

Hmm...any ways you can cut back spending?

Cut back on food, gas, and the occasional bills?

That works then. Before you accept though, check to see how much that'll cut back and if that means you can live off the Lego paycheck. Also, if your boss is the kind of person who supports people's dreams, tell him your following your dream and see if, if it doesn't work out and/or once the part-time job is over, he'd give you your job back.

No it doesn't work.

I use gas to get to work and to get to Meaghan, and also to places we need to go.

I need food to live.

And if bills aren't paid, then I cannot use my phone nor drive my car.

That won't work either. If I quit just to get another job, chances are I won't get the job back.

And I think you missed the part where I said that Walmart is near my home and Lego is near Meaghan (which I intend to move in with). If I tried going back to my Wal-mart, that kinda defeats the whole purpose of living with Meaghan.

Apologies, I thought you meant non-necessary food, gas and bills.

Hmm...well, this can be solved with one simple thing, albeit you'd be imposing with Meghan moreso than just moving in with her; you could see if she would be willing to get a job. I'm not an expert on relationships as the various double entrende's I've said that have gotten me slapped can attest, but I'm petty sure that if you two are in love, she'd be willing to do so to help you pursue your dreams.

She has a full time job at CVS as a certified pharmacy technician that she already makes more than me at.
