The Sorry State Of Cot Rpgs

In RPG Topic: ZOMG Edition Bunda asked whether a Mass Effect RPG was viable. I told him it was. I told him the market for Sci-FI RPGs was open and that ME would do well. Oh how wrong I was.

Super/Sci-Fi-22 75%

Mecha-2 6%

Sandbox-2 6%

Fantasy-5 13%

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? When 75% of all your RPGs deal with superpowers and space ships you know you have a problem. COT Role Players! We need to expand our outlook. An RPG is not great because it has "the ownedage powrz". People are obviously tiring of these forms of RPGs.

Whenever someone creates a new game, people click on it to see if it's good. Then they see the words "In the year 2233, American scientists....". They promptly backspace as fast as possible. The majority of RPGs in COT are FAILING! They are failing because they are not ORIGINAL.

Currently, the most successful RPGs in COT are Reality, Heroes, To Save The World, and Transformers. Reality has been around for ages and has the sandbox factor. Heroes is based off a popular series. Like Reality, TSTW has been there for ages. And Transformers is riding off the success of the previous RPG.

These are 4 RPGs. There are 29 total RPGs in COT. We can do better than this. I know we can. I want all RPers to think up something original.

That is why I have decided not to approve RPGs unless they bring something new to the table and are not just a rehash of last year's fodder. I encourage the other judges to stand with me and save COT from emminent doom!

Yay!

This is why I like the look of ideas like If and Maximum Security. Originality

Well, add one to the rest as well ('cept Mecha [for now]) cause it fits into them all :P, waht with dragons and wizards and space ships

Personally, it's probably the literally infinite possibilities that the future offers that makes the Sci-Fi genre a popular one to create an RPG in. That might not be the reason, but that seems to be the most logical explanation, besides the fact that some people (Like me) just happen to like thinking about the future, space and that sort of stuff. Sci-Fi RPGs can be varied enough to be a large portion of the RPG scene, but I do have to agree that many of the Sci-Fi RPGs now-a-days aren't varied. Maximum Security is a great example of a Sci-Fi RPG that strays far enough from the normal Sci-Fi RPG to be considered unique. Personally, I'm attempting to make a Sci-Fi RPG (*grabs flame shield*), but I'm trying to make it unique so it doesn't blend in with the rest.

It sounds like Hollywood saying they won't make any more action movies because they make too much money. >_>

This.

Who cares about genre? People want to have fun. If they have fun in LOST GALAXY then MYSTIC FORCE, then it ain't a problem.
