Blast From The Past

So for work today, I've been trawling through a bunch of old Style Guide material from 2001-2003, and it sure brings back memories. Some of this stuff never saw the light of day, or was released in different formats. One of the images I thought was cool but I don't recall being released was one of the Rahi facing down Tahu.

Of course, my memory could be faulty and maybe it was used somewhere - I'm old, after all. But still, it's a small sample of stuff I've been running across. Some of the layered Photoshop images are fun, since I can deconstruct them to see what layers were used. One of Lewa in the jungle, for instance, had an evil pair of red eyes in the deep foliage, which you couldn't really see. I drilled down until I could see the outline of a cougar with red eyes, very un-BIONICLE but it worked in context.

This is the kind of stuff that geeks me out - the kind of stuff you guys would all spend hours poring over. I honestly haven't put my "BIONICLE fan" hat on too often, although lately it's been more and more since I've become more involved with steering the story. Vive la Geek!

You know Bink, Sometimes I think that those images should be released in packs as downloads on BIONICLE.com as Fan Kits or something. It's a shame how much art never sees the light of day, or sees it only on paper.

Would you be willing to actually pay a little bit for some concept art and background info about the genesis of BIONICLE? Just curious.

Depends on if it's worldwide (even though even if it's only available through US site. I mean, there's not a Chinese page or Spanish page.) and how much it is. (0.99 $/€ would be OK?)

Thinking more like a book of concept art, unreleased images, sketches, renders, background info, interviews, stuff like that.

Then again it wouldn't be digital :P

Some kind of high res PDF alternative would be neat. But anyways, I'd definetly pay for a book Bink :)

If you're asking, that means there's a possibility of you actually considering it. MATA NUI, that would be friggin' sweet!! I would gladly pay to own a book filled with concept art and sketches. I'm sure most of BZP would agree with me that we would eat it up!

Also, is there a possibility of you releasing the Photoshop files for posters and other art we have seen before? Just curious.

I would pay a lot to have a book like that, with all the concepts and stuff from 2001. Many bits and pieces of the story bible that have been covered in the past so we can see what that actually is? I would love a book like that though, and would most certainly buy two or three copies. Hopefully Lego would consider it?

If the stuff's even remotely like the concept art at BrickFest, then yes, of course I would buy it. So much inspiration, it's enough to drool over...

I would be a thousand times more likely to buy that than any other Bionicle merchandise currently available. I would pay good money.

I would absolutely love a concept book as well, but as an image-orientated book, you'd have to find a way to prevent most of it's valuable content during up on reference sites such as BS01.

I would buy it for sure, though what would really be awesome would be something in a digital format. Maybe the book comes with a CD with lots of images and videos and stuff?

Yes, a nice, large, coffee-table book. "The Art of BIONICLE." Huge, glossy pages covered with concept drawings, paintings, early CGI renderings of the toys, advertisements, promotional images, box art, you name it. I'd pay premium if it was mostly (like, at least 75%) images never-before-seen by the public. Kind of like that stuff that popped up on the Advance website by Christian Faber. Although we have already seen those, having them in a larger size would be a lot better.

Though I know this won't happen, if this kind of book was released next year, I'd probably buy it over the entire range of purported BIONICLE Stars sets being released. I am a HUGE fan of conceptual art, as I think pieces such as those, so-called works-in-progress, really reveal a lot of open imagination that ends up being trimmed or left on the cutting room floor entirely when the final product, be it a movie, TV show, video game, or even a toy line like BIONICLE, is released.

WANT BOOK.

With some short stories to clear up a few unexplored areas of the story - Jovan's team, Lhikan's team, Lesovikk's team perhaps.

Plus concept art.

Plus a guide to every set so far, like the Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary.

Please can that be done? PLEASE? INVESTIGATE! :P

So, I know Bink's blog entry here has receded into the cobwebs of the Internet, but in the years since he wrote of this idea, I think now, more than ever, is a good time for it. BIONICLE's 20th anniversary is next year. What better time to release an adult-sized, coffee-table type book filled with high-res scans and pictures of BIONICLE concept art and models from 1999 to 2010? I am particularly interested in the early years (2001 through 2004), and especially in stuff no one has seen before (or at least, not in high resolution). Christian Faber did a wonderful gesture by posting some of this stuff on his blog, but that has fallen by the wayside since he has his own projects going on.

Would the fact that the original story bibles, concept art, and prototypes are still considered by LEGO to be viable seeds for future sets be what's holding back the creation of such a book? Perhaps this was the case ten years ago, when it was hoped that BIONICLE would come back and constraction themes were still a mainstay in LEGO's lineup, but now constraction is dead and BIONICLE has rebooted and died again. C'mon Kelly, use that old LEGO employee clout to get us BIONICLE geeks the book we deserve!
