"you Fail"
Okay, I saw this around. In the Comics forum, but sometimes also in GA.
Seriously, is that really necessary?
Of course, it is easier to go to a topic and post "it sucks" or "you fail" instead of giving helpful advice and help the person improve.
When you view something there, it's never the final stage of improvement. No matter whether the artwork/comic/story is by a famous writer/artist/comic maker or by a starter. There's always room for improvement. People just need time. You can help them by telling them what they should focus on, and give them tips if you have any.
Or you can go around and tell them that their work is awful. Of course you can, it's easier and faster than writing a review. But it hurts the other person's feelings. Or it might make him/her give something up entirely, even though they might be talented. Would you really want that?
"I can't write reviews" or "I can't draw/write/make comics"
That's okay, you don't have to. But I've experienced that every person can say something helpful about art. Take my mum for example. She can not draw herself, but she always spots things that could be improved on.
I can't make comics, but I can still tell whether a sprite is oddly placed or not.
A one-or-two-semtence post can be helpful as well. Something like "These comics are okay. You could do something about the grammar, though" is not hard to write, and gives the person criticised at least an idea of what could be done.
Long reviews are nice, but not necessary. Get 5 two-sentence posts, and you might be able to figure what really should be done.
"Reviews take long to write"
As said above, you don't have to write long, in-depth reviews. Just don't be too unfriendly.
"But what if it REALLY sucks?"
Euh.
1) Keep in mind that usually the person posting their work wants to hear opinions. Yes, you don't have to be all happy-cheerful and say "Awesome" to every thing you see, but you don't have to be harsh. If you state that 'you don't like it, but that is your opinion', then it is okay.
2) Check the person's profile for the age. You can't expect an 11-year-old to make comics like an 18-year-old.
3) Remember, you're criticising the work, not the one who did it.
Nobody's perfect.
Thanks for your attention,
