"for What It's Worth ..."

GregF

Recently, a BZPer posted a topic insisting I had been rude to him in my answer to his PM. He had asked a question for which I did not have what I felt was a good or complete answer, so I appended, "for what it's worth to you" to the end of the answer -- since I had no way of knowing if the little bit of info I was giving would answer his question. He somehow decided that meant I thought his question was worthless or stupid, which was not the case. (If I HAD thought that, I simply wouldn't have bothered to answer at all.) As I think most of you know, "for what it's worth to you" simply means, "I don't know if this will any help to you or not, you have to decide that."

I have since explained this to him, but he seems determined to remain offended, and there is nothing I can do about that. But I thought it brought up a larger issue.

Yes, I answer a lot of PMs here, when I don't have to -- but that also means I am not FORCED to. So while sometimes my answers are curt -- even a lot of times -- I don't try to be rude and I don't intend to be. You guys are fans, and because of that, you need to be treated with respect. For some people, getting just a "yes" or "no" may seem harsh or rude, but that comes from the fact that if I take time to write long answers to everyone, I won't have time to answer all the questions I get. And in some cases, like this one, someone just honestly misinterprets something I say, and all I can do in that case is try to explain that they took it the wrong way.

I will not sit here and say I am never a little cranky on here :), especially when people are trying to reopen debates for the 12th time that have long been closed. There are some things it is just a waste of time to go into, and if it's obvious the person knew that before asking, then my patience wears a little thin. But in the end, you are taking your free time to ask me stuff, and I am taking mine to answer -- and so we both have to respect each other, for the same reasons.

Eh, people like that pop up all the time. And yet a day later they will be asking you questions again and saying that you are awesome.

Ignore them.

It really is sad when someone automatically takes offense over things they don't understand.

Well, Greg, all I can say is I respect you, esspecially now, with BIONICLE at it's end

You still give us information, we still ask, it really is a respectable relationship...

As I said in the topic, sometimes I get the feeling I'm annoying you, but that is only when I am battering you with my thoughts and when I start to get this feeling, I usually stop doing follow-ups :). But in general, your replies are always as polite as necessary while still being very concise and to the point - and that is a good thing, too. If you'd be writing essays as an answer, you might even confuse people, while a definite "Yes" or "No" or even the infamous "Can't answer it" give a clear answer or, in the latter case, show us that you are not allowed to answer.

Still, you [and that is "you" in general, not specifically to you, Greg] can't please everyone, and while one should try not to alienate people or offend them, you shouldn't try to force people to like you. To each his own and me the rest, I use to say.

First off, again, thanks for answering questions. Especially since you reply quickly.

Members need to realize that you get a boatload of questions every day. That is why I do not mind it when you simply give a "yes" or a "no," because it is simple, answers the question, and leaves it open without explanation so the member can continue to think about the next step, instead of you writing a paragraph for every answer explaining it.

I've never seen you being rude and those kinds of members need to realize your "position" on this site. If they are asking you questions, they should want you to stick around, and not giving you the utmost respect will not do that.

Just ignore the people who don't appreciate what you do, because they are a vocal minority. The majority of BZPers are thankful for your presence here, as they should. I do not understand any member who does not appreciate that.

*facepalm* People are still trying to dig into that? Goodness gracious.

If I was you, I'd end up punching members or something. So kudos, Mr. Greg.

I was reading through that topic yesterday, and had no idea where that person was getting the idea that you were being rude. You do a great job of giving us clear and to the point answers, which I greatly appreciate. And I can understand how you can get a little cranky on here, as I've actually noticed some of the stuff you said from time to time in the OGD. And the respect thing you mentioned goes both ways. We, as fans, also need to respect you, the writer, for spending the extra time to answer all of our questions, which is something not a lot of writers do which makes me very grateful for the time you spend here.

He's just a troll who doesn't like you and was trying to get a hot topic; you can tell because he kept saying things like "hot topic number 10, keep posting let's see if we can get more."

Agreed.

I'm really glad that you decided to take the time out of your (doubtlessly) busy schedule, and over the years I realized you wer ethe exception, not the rule, as authors go, and that just made me respect you even more.

Even though the sets are on the brink of ending, you're still here, answering our questions, and that leads me to realize that all of us, on BZP, are a community, and we're going to meet the end of BIONICLE as a community. Thank you.

Greg, Sarcon, who I assume is the person you're speaking about, has been acting rudely and immaturely in several topics around BZP. You should take his opinion as a grain of salt. He acted a LOT ruder than just saying "For what it's worth" (Which I can't see how anyone could consider rude)

And I want to say that while sometimes you might seem rude, you're not. You're responses sometimes can be interpreted wrongly, which I guess was his problem

Agreed, RatHasCome. I myself have never seen a Greg answer that I could possibly see anyone interpreting as rude... but seeing as Sarcon finds the Member Spotlight "unfair", he's hopeless.

What was the question?

The question was pertaining to the different ways Ackar was defeated by Strakk. In the comic he was struck in the back, and in the movie he turned around and was then struck. This member asked which was canon. Greg responded saying that what happened in the comic was what was supposed to happen in the movie (or vice-versa), and said "for what it's worth." The member took this the wrong way and spawned a 2 page flame fest.

You're absolutely in the right, Greg. And lemme add that if anyone uses S&T and specifically the OGD as a launching board for such flame or trolling against you (or anyone else), all S&T staff have my full permission to remove those posts entirely.

And ultimately, we must all remember this is just entertainment, anyways. :)

You got more patience then I do, I know there are plenty of times I've just been reading the questions people send and I become infuriated. It's fun.
