Relax ...

GregF

In the last week or so, I have all of a sudden gotten bombarded with people wanting to know colors for various elements, and others wanting to add new elements to the story. Relax, please -- I am not looking to open the floodgates and add a ton of new tribes/elements to the story. As for colors, I understand you need them for MOCing, but your best bet might be to do those things as polls so we get an idea of what the site as a whole thinks of various suggestions. I am not a set designer or a MOCer, so not the best person to determine what color looks nice with what.

Hai Greg can we have an element of awesome? It can be all pink and purple and be awesome. 8D

Also an element of EW would be much appreciated.

Thank you Greg you are my god. You are like Edward Cullen only real awesome. :)

Mmm, I feel your pain.

Well Kinda, no one asks me for new MoC colors and elements :P

But I also have a workload and would like people to back off. So I will take your advice and relax.

Creating new elements? I bet this is because of the whole psionics fiasco. What kind of elements were they recommending, or did you pay no attention?

Anyways, about the colors, the recommendation you made is good. Voting on it seems like our best bet for a unified choice, rather than someone recommending some random color scheme random and you choosing it. With your blessing, certain colors can become canon, but I doubt every single poll held will convince you to make a choice. Hope the enquirers settle down for a while, too. Merry Christmas. :)

It's possible it was because of the Psionics movement, yes. I think when it got the prefix and colors, that led to this problem.

LOL at EW.

As for colors of elements and MOCing, I half feel that I like not having it defined as canon (unless it is finally placed into a book, story, or sets, the last being highly unlikely since the sets stuck to the basic 6 elements :( ) so we can be more creative as to what our MOCs look like. (I'm still planning a yellow/black Toa of Electricity because of the pieces I have....)

Er, I have to say that I sort of started the whole new element thing... well, maybe secondarily at that, as I saw the element Kinetics off of someone's list of proposed elements to Greg. But I think I was the first member to actually propose another singular element with powers and limitations behind it- yes, trying to be like Erebus. However, I guess the snowball effect kicked in, and a lot more people asked about that, etc.

So, my bad Greg. I just had a "brilliant" idea. Sorry if it got a little out of hand.

(That still doesn't change the fact that a Toa of motion wouldn't be nice.)

I gotta admit, I've seen quite a bit of that showing up in the OGD lately. Personally I think I'd rather wait until toa with particular element appears in story before worrying about what colors represent it.

THANK YOU!

Honestly, I've seen several instances where you're telling people you don't want new suggestions / color ideas.

I'd rather it clog the elements topic than bug you to ad nauseum about them.

Already, the current elements have a few unknowns, and should get attention anyway.

Perhaps once a general agreement can be reached, someone (me? :P ) can get the list together of possible colors / names / matoran abilities / stuff like that, which we can have a series of polls on, and submitted to you. Perhaps an S&T-wide event?

Since Psionics, my elements topic has doubled in size in roughly a month (a good 40+ pages, and I have pages set above the default display XD). I think this may work.

We already got one for Plasma going on one here, but a massive poll could be pretty awesome.

Or we could all just be patient and see if it shows up in the story. I like this option a lot too >>

I just read the Iron colours in the OGD. While I do like them and while I appreciate official colours for the MU elements, it really should be done in a poll where everyone gets to decide their favourite colours and you, Greg, canonize them.

How about this:

- one Element Colour Poll per week, with two poll questions and the maximum of allowed answers for each.

- the first poll question will decide the primary colour

- the second one the secondary colour

Maybe S&T would like to do these polls. Or, of course, we wait.

Consensus is important, I think -- I mean, shortly after getting impassioned pleas to do Kinetics as an element, I got impassioned pleas from other members I respect NOT to. That sort of puts me in the middle on an issue that really isn't vital to what I am doing now.

I don't think anyone wants the entire periodic table represented in BIONICLE, and I think some of this is coming about from a misunderstanding. Someone wrote today and said I was "more at liberty" to canonize things now -- which sort of confused me. What has changed is there are no sets in summer 2010 and onward that I have to work into story. That's it. That has nothing to do with whether or not new elements can get added into story, etc., or what the explanation for some previously unexplained 2009 set issue is. I'm neither at more or less liberty than I was a year ago on that sort of thing.

One suggestion that has been made is that I come up with any new elements that get added into story, which is fine, except that I probably won't because I see no real need for a mess of new elements.

I believe we have enough elements for now - my opinion is that we have to explore them first before new ones get added. We never really got to know Toa with the elements of Plasma, Magnetism (although we know Jovan, he never really appeared anywhere), Psionics, Iron, Gravity (except Hewkii with his Kanohi Garai) and even Lightning, because Nikila didn't have any real appearances, just one in a Karzahni-made illusion. Before any new elements are introduced, I think they should be explored further, which means we need colours, prefixes, abilities, characters and, most of all, uses of these elements in story. And I see no reason not to do that in story from 2010 on, since there are no longer sets tied to the six "core elements". Of course, if the story moves to Bota Magna, that will not be possible there, but maybe a RoS-like serial for the MU could still be done.

On the top of my head, counting all MU and Spherus Magna elements and also legendary elements, I get a total number of 19 existing elements. Take away Time and Life and we're left with 17. And since Sand is SM-only, we still have 16 MU elements, of which only a few - Fire, Water, Ice, Air, Stone, Earth, Light and Shadow - got major attention in story, with some others making minor (Sonics and Gravity, in particular) or very minor appearances (Lightning or Plantlife). Note that I only count uses by Toa, not by Bohrok-Kal etc.

So, not counting those with major appearances, there are still eight elements to explore in the Matoran Universe: Gravity, Sonics, Iron, Plasma, Psionics, Lightning, Magnetism and Jungle/Plantlife/The Green. You could argue that some of them (Psionics, Sonics and Iron) already have prefixes, but except Krakua, we never really got to know those who wield these elements. What is their elements' effect on their character (you know, stuff like hot-headedness, cold reason, lightweight attitude tec.), what are their strengths and weaknesses? Before anything else gets added, I'd like to know more about that. And remember: Although the Matoran Universe is huge, there is only so much room for different Matoran tribes.

Thanks for doing all you've been doing to answer our questions, Greg. Seeing as some of us are so eager about these elements (myself included) how about starting some polls?

Link to comment

Well, all we need colour wise is Gravity, so that should be pretty easy.

(I vote for Black, Silver (in bohrok honour), and purple.)

I agree for the most part. It'd be better to have info on what we are given than get new ones with more unknown info. And we have ~20-21, depending on if you split Rock and Stone. :P

And for colors, we also don't know about the legendaries for instance (possibly just the mask's color anyway).

Yes, I've been very, very eager to learn more about the elements. But I'm not that interested in having new ones added.

Link to comment

Yes, we have plenty of elements. More than enough, in my opinion. I don't understand this sudden urgent need to know all the colors, either. People have just been using their own imagination for mocs up until now, suddenly it's not good enough?

Link to comment

Actually, I think it stemmed from the Psionics relevation period because a member suggested colors to GregF and he liked it.

Also, take note that he has plans to write a serial based on Toa with elements that are not of Fire, Water, Air, Stone, Earth, and Ice. The uncommon elements, if you will.

Link to comment

I think some of the color issue also stems from when a member, cleverly remembering an old PM from Greg that said that he envisioned Lightning with blue and white armor, brought the issue back up (as the story is no longer bound to sets) and asked Greg to confirm that.

But yeah, that new serial is gonna be good.

That'll be awesome. (Can I say, "about time"?)

I still stand by not knowing the colors and being creative in MOCs.

Also, we can't have and don't need a Toa of every element on the periodic table, because Bionicle is not those kind of elements. (Fire, water? etc)

I definately think polls are the way to go. onf suggested it to me and I agreed. Let's discuss what prefixes and colors to pollify in the Official Elements Topic, and then make a poll per element.

(Talking about the ones that are already elements like Gravity, I mean.)

I would personally hope for the prefixes, if not the colors, from the Expanded Multiverse to be able to become canon, but... best to see what the majority thinks, sure. :P
