I'm not claiming to know anything about philosophical literature but I personally believe every philosopher ever was either a pretentious lunatic or a troll who just wanted people to quote what he said and make it harder to find the people to stupid form their own opinions.

I'd recommend Albert Camus. I don't necessarily agree with all his tenants, but I don't feel he fits the description you've laid out here.

 

You may also want to read material by many of the Renaissance Humanists - the core of their philosophies was self-determination.
