Any of you remember that murder mystery idea/prologue I posted before?

Well, there are several reasons why I have not worked on it any further than I have. One of the reasons is because I'm not sure which idea I like best for the detective. So I will be listing all my ideas, and I'd appreciate if you'd list your choices from one to five [1 being your favorite choice, and 5 being your least-favorite].

-A specific police detective

-A private investigator

-Just normal police [so the detective would change every time]

-A retired police detective that now works as a PI of sorts

-A team of people [like a government agency or something -- please state what agency, if any]

-Something else? [say what]

Thanks for all the replies.

My thoughts...

  1. A private investigator
  2. A retired police detective that now works as a PI of sorts
  3. A specific police detective
  4. Just normal police
  5. A team of people
I've always liked the PI-told stories. I also like the idea of the story being told from only one person's perspective.

Harry Dresden! :P

I think a government agency would be cool. Stories always seem to show agencies like the CIA or FBI as tall guys in suits with sunglasses. It'd be cool to get things from their point of view, or something like that.

That is pretty funny. :P

  2. A private investigator.
  3. A specific police detective.
  4. Just normal police.
  5. A team of people.
It seems that teams are done a lot these days, with shows like Cold Case, Bones, NCIS...

Detectives are overrated and overused; have a normal person solve the crime on their own.

I was considering that, but I don't really like that idea all that much. I may write one some day with someone like that, but not for this one. Not sure why, but it's just not my preference.

@ Kiotu, yeah, that's why I was reluctant to add that one on the list, but I did anyway.

Thanks for all the comments, guys.

In that case, I recommend having it be solved by an evil, shady government organization in which the person they are after is some sort of "good guy." That would be an interesting twist.

What Ballom said.

If you insist on the order though, here you go:

1-A team of people (CIA? FBI? CSIS? MI6? MI5?)

2-A retired police detective that now works as a PI of sorts

3-A private investigator

4-A specific police detective

5-Just normal police

A private detective provides for very interesting story, since it somewhat hints at vigilantism, which is a broad and entertaining subject for writing.

Though considered cliche, private detectives are amazing to write about. Even if you decide to go all classy like Humphrey Bogart or Harrison Ford...it's still awesome. As long as you pull it off right though.
